Boy, howdy, that last post left a foul taste in my mouth!
Well, here’s a tiny watchman on the wall–a little pika chirping out a warning. These small relatives of rabbits live among the rocky slopes of mountains, and they let each other know when danger’s coming.
How often have God’s watchmen sounded the trumpet from the walls! It would have been good for us to listen.
I’ve long thought these pikas were about the cutest little animals you’d ever see. Distantly related to rabbits, they look more like tailless mice or hamsters, only with bigger, rounder ears. They do look cuddly, don’t they? And they make this call that sounds like “Eep!” Wasn’t there a pitcher, long ago, who made a sound like that every time he threw the baseball?
It’s not a rabbit at all, but a pika–furry little animals that live on mountainsides, amid the rocks. We have some in North America.
This is the “Ili Pika,” from a remote region of China. Until these photos were taken, it hadn’t been seen in 20 years. Please ignore the narrator’s blather about Global Warming causing this animal to go extinct. They only say that to make you believe you have to give the government a lot more of your money and expanded powers to trouble your lives.
Yes, it would be a tragedy to lose such an adorable little creature. Maybe a captive breeding program could ensure its survival. If it lived in America instead of China, something like that would already be happening.
