‘Calon Lan’ (‘A Pure Heart’)

I don’t know why, but this hymn is with me this morning and won’t let go.

Calon Lan, Welsh for “a pure heart”–song by Bryn Terfel, soloist, and the Dunvant Male Choir, at Mynyddbach Cathedral, Wales (where else?)–has become sort of an anthem from the Welsh national soccer team.

Welsh Hymn, ‘Calon Lan’

This hymn kept coming to mind last night, so I thought I’d better post it–spiritual balm for a wounded spirit.

Calon Lan (“A Pure Heart”) in Welsh, at Mynyddbach Chapel, solo by Bryn Terfel, chorus by the Dunvant Male Choir.

‘All Through the Night’ (in Welsh)

Looks like everybody’s gone to the beach today. But for those who are here, I thought you might enjoy this–Ar Hyd y Nos. “All Through the Night” in Welsh. Some of us have known it as a bedtime lullaby; but it’s also a hymn. Sung by Bryn Terfel.

Encore, ‘Hyfrydol’

Foggy, dreary, wet this morning; and no hymn requests, so I’m on my own.

How about a nice Welsh hymn? Hyfrydol, with Bryn Terfel as soloist, backed up by the Welsh National Opera Orchestra. Don’t worry if you can’t make out the lyrics; they’re in Welsh. But the music speaks for itself… and says “Amen.”

‘Hyfrydol’

Every denomination, it seems has its own set of lyrics to go with this hymn. But here we have the original Hyfrydol, sung in Welsh by a Welsh choir. I can’t translate a word of it, but I don’t think I have to: the music speaks for itself.

‘Hyfrydol’ (Welsh Hymn)

You don’t have to be Welsh to love this hymn. The melody’s always the same, but every denomination’s hymnal has a different set of lyrics.

Hyfrydol–here performed, Welsh, by Bryn Terfel.

Today’s Hot Hymn: ‘Hyfrydol’

The Welsh hymn, Hyfrydol (the word in Welsh means “tuneful” or “pleasant”), is certainly one of my favorites. Naturally I post it now and then.

This morning when I woke, Patty called, “Come down, you’ve got to see this! Your blog–I don’t know what’s happening with it!” I thought, “Gee, maybe I’ve got 100 views already.” A hundred views before I finish breakfast is a spectacular start that hardly ever happens.

Imagine my surprise to find over 350! And most of them for this hymn, Hyfrydol: most of them from the U.K.

So in case you missed it the first time around, here it is again, sung by Bryn Terfel and the Black Mountain Male Chorus.
