Remember Dallas–with Larry Hagman as the bad guy, J.R. Ewing? Remember how popular that was? It came out in 1978, was a huuuuge hit throughout the ’80’s, and finished up in 1991. If you’re too young to remember, trust me–there was nothing in our pop culture bigger than Dallas.

And we had weasels out there who wanted to be “just like J.R.!” So they did nasty, petty, shameful things. On purpose. Because they thought it was cool.

Is this what happened to the Etruscans? Is this why they’re not here anymore? Were there other civilizations, now extinct, that praised and emulated things they should have been ashamed of?

Yeah. Probably.

Many of you are way too young to remember a show called Dallas, featuring an antihero named J.R. Ewing (played by Larry Hagman, who used to be in I Dream of Jeannie). The show was a huge hit, and the J.R. character became a national icon. What does that tell us about our nation? People wanted to imitate the bad guy!

Toxic Fiction

Many of you are way to young to remember Dallas, a red-hot hit of a TV show starring Larry Hagman as iconic antihero J.R. Ewing. J.R. captured the public’s imagination: the more evil he did, the more they liked him.

Well, we don’t need J.R. or Dallas anymore; we have real-life villains that make him look like a philanthropist, and the daily nooze coming out of the Biden administration puts Dallas in the shade. And unlike Dallas, it’s on every day, not once a week. J.R. was a saint compared to these stiffs.

And in real life, there were actually adult human beings who… well, who wanted to be like him.

I suppose it could be worse. Someone might want to be like Hillary Clinton. But we’re talking adults here, and adults are supposed to be past that kind of thing.

And we’re also talking pop culture “entertainment”–a slow-acting but exceedingly powerful toxin.

Unless it’s our sleazy culture that generates our sleazy entertainment. Could we be talking about a vicious circle here?
