Cats & Christmas Trees: The Disaster Movie

We put up our Christmas tree today (to be decorated tomorrow), and it turned out to be a hard job because the trunk and the tree-stand were only marginally compatible. But we managed it in the end–and then the cats came and slept peacefully under it. They love to sleep under our Christmas tree. They have never attempted to climb one. Never. Gold stars for them.

Handy Hint for When Cats Get Bodacious with the Christmas Tree: a couple of marbles (or quarters) in a tin can, shaken at the right moment, will deter cats from getting out of hand vis-a-vis the tree. We had to do that for Buster’s first Christmas, but he learned his lesson and was a good boy from then on.

How Cats Save the Planet

Cats Save The Planet by leaving it alone and just enjoying it. Boy, do they have fun in snow! Well, so could I, if it ever got around to snowing around here. Note the cat who’s figured out sledding. Oh, to be back on my Yankee Clipper sled!

Personality Pups

In addition to regularly getting me past the Facebook censorship robot, puppies are every bit as funny as cats. These little videos prove it.

I don’t know, though, that there’s any future in chasing your leash around the laundry basket while it’s still attached to your collar (the leash, not the basket). If any of you have ever tried it, please tell us how it worked out for you.

Furry and Funny

This video was billed as “Extremely funny cats and dogs.” Having examined it minutely, I concur. I don’t often get the chance to use the word, “concur.”

I would like to add that dogs are easier to figure out than cats. What do you think? I find lizards and turtles very easy to understand, and cats–almost impossible to guess what they’re thinking.

Dogs Take TV Too Seriously

Some dogs understand that television isn’t real, which is more than can be said for humans who watch CNN. But the dogs in these videos haven’t attained that level of sophistication.

It’s fun to watch how high they can jump up and down, trying to get a better look at what’s inside the funny box; but it would be nice to clue them in. Thinking what you see on TV is real must be a heavy burden.

Kitty’s Got Mail

Well, at least they don’t answer the phone…

Oddly enough, I’ve never lived in a home that had a mail slot, so none of my cats ever had the opportunity to go postal over the post. I wonder if this would be a credible excuse for skipping jury duty: “The cat ate my notification.”

A Pet You Never Thought Of Having

It has nice, soft fur; but it also has a duck’s bill, and lays eggs. The males have poisonous spurs in their heels that can really ruin your day, if you annoy them. It lives in the water and waddles around on land. And it’s kind of hard to type it correctly.

It is, of course, the duck-billed platypus, from Australia. As you can see, this female platypus is nice to handle and seems quite affectionate.

You can’t just waltz into Pet Smart and buy one, though. Probably you can’t do that even in Australia.

Now watch–it’ll turn out that at least one of you has a pet platypus and people will think I don’t know what I’m talking about.

Our Pets Love Cardboard Boxes

Cats (big-time!), dogs, bunnies, baby goats–our pets just love those cardboard boxes. Well, all right, your pet fence lizards can live without them. But the fuzzy pets just can’t leave the boxes alone. Come to think of it, little children love getting into boxes, too–at least I did, back when. I guess it’s a mammal thing.

Ducks & Doggies

We know dogs love to play, but do ducks? In a few of these videos, it sure looks it. And we also have clips of ducks grooming dogs. Who knew that could happen? And in some of the other videos it looks like a dog gets the what-for if he annoys a duck.

Is it possible that domestication runs deeper than we thought?

Assorted Cute Critters

The humans in these videos are kind of weird, but the animals are cute and funny.

In that next-to-the last clip, if you watched it closely, do you know what that turtle was doing? We checked with Mr. Nature. It was a courtship display. He was courting that big fish that was sort of turtle-colored. Our turtle courted a glass turtle like that. Made us feel awful guilty for not providing a real mate. But it’s not so easy to just go out and grab a painted turtle.
