How I love this hymn! And it’s one of the oldest hymns we have, too, going back to Ireland early in the 8th century. Be Thou My Vision, performed by the Irish Tenors: it will stir your soul.

This Is My Father’s World is one of my favorite hymns. It never fails to move me. I very much wanted it performed by a lady in a print dress on the Sunday school piano, but it seemed every version I looked at on youtube today was being performed by someone who thought he or she was auditioning for a Las Vegas floor show. Finally I found Daniel Choo, here, with his guitar. Thank you, Daniel–very nice.
It’s raining gently here today, on and off, and this is the hymn that came to mind today–Fairest Lord Jesus/Beautiful Savior. I grew up thinking it was a crusaders’ hymn, because that’s what it said in our church’s hymnal; but in fact it was published in 1873.
This version is by the Oasis Chorale.
Blessed Assurance has been in my mind lately, and so has Fountainview Academy. When I went to youtube this morning to select a hymn, I soon settled on this. Then, returning here to post it, I first noticed I had a new message from “thewhiterabbit”–requesting Blessed Assurance as the hymn for the day.
Now that is cool!
So here it is, words by Fanny Crosby, performed by Fountainview Academy. And if the background scenery looks funny, it’s because the kids were visiting Italy at the time.
It’s amazing what can be done with the human voice as a musical instrument, praising the Lord. The kids at Fountainview Academy are in perfect harmony here, performing Power in the Blood. Wow!
I have two hymn requests today, and I’m happy to post them both. In a little while I’ll explain why.
First, requested by Phoebe, O God, Our Help in Ages Past, written by Isaac Watts, sung by the Sharon Mennonite Bible Institute Singers. Would you believe we used to sing this in high school, for assembly? They don’t praise God in public schools anymore, and America is by far the poorer for it.
What a Friend We Have in Jesus–sometimes I whistle it as I walk along, and sometimes someone else will pause in whatever he’s doing, look up, and smile. There’s hope for us yet.
Turn up the volume and sing along.
You can understand the Latin lyric, if you put your mind to it: “Rejoice, rejoice! Christ is born of the Virgin Mary.” Gaudete. I hope you don’t mind another Christmas song slipping in. I wanted to hear it again. This version’s by Maddy Prior and Steeleye Span.
Personal Note: I haven’t called the hospital yet today, but they haven’t called me, either. I wonder how long I dare leave it like that.
I hope you don’t mind my posting this hymn for the umpteenth time–Light of the World by Charles Wesley, performed by Maddy Prior and the Carnival Band. This hymn never fails to stir my soul.
For Jesus Christ is the light of the world, that lights everyone who comes into the world. He is the Light they can’t put out, not all their hellish legions of the ungodly: God knows who they are.
I’m waiting for the hospital to call with another update on Aunt Joan. They were too busy to talk to me when I called earlier this morning.
This ancient Scottish hymn, Behold, the Mountain of the Lord, is one of my favorites. I don’t know about you, but I need pumping up today. Aunt Joan is in the hospital again, and of course there’s the nooze of the country and the world: If the Lord Our God didn’t give us hope, how would we live?
This rendition by Godfrey Birtill is my favorite. Turn up the volume and sing along. Let the neighbors think you’re crazy.
