Cows vs… Toy Car?

Those of us who don’t know cows very well ten to think of them as these big, plasic things that just stand around and swish their tails. But throw a remote-controlled toy car into the mix and watch what happens.

First the cows chase the car. Then it chases them. Are they angry, scared–or just playing?

I guess you’d have to ask them.

A Few More Funny Cats

As we all sit here and contemplate our deploreableness, I think it might help pass the time if we had a few nice cats to watch.

As for the tortoise trying to take a bite out of the sleeping cat’s toe, I’m sure it looks like a little piece of fruit to him. Some reptiles see color. My iguana used to try to eat pictures of tomatoes or strawberries because all his favorite fruits were red. Color, yes. Three dimensions, not so good.

Video Treat: Some Cuddly Critters

Sometimes I think dogs and cats and birds appreciate the blessings of civilization a lot more than we humans do. They seem to enjoy it more, at least.

Note the cat bringing in a rose to her mommy. Cats love to bestow gifts on people. If not a rose, then half a mouse, part of a bird, whatever…

How Not to Get Possums Out of Your Garbage Can

Hi, Mr. Nature here–and you do not have to do what these people do to get a possum out of your garbage can.

This morning when I went out to ride my bike, I discovered two young possums sleeping in one of our garbage cans–which means they climbed in to get something nice and disgusting and then couldn’t climb out.

Really, all you have to do is gently turn the can over on its side and then leave them alone. They’ll just get up and leave. You don’t have to freak them out by kicking the bottom of the can.

Another time, I went to put a bag in the can and spotted a very, very big possum inside it. Very, very dead, too. Oh, spiffy. You know how road-killed animals get all stiff and flat after a while? This possum looked like it had been dead for several days.

Well, I couldn’t just leave it there. I tipped it out of the can–

And it got up, hissed at me, and ran away!

“Playing possum” can be quite convincing.

A Puzzling Fact of Nature

Hi, everybody–Mr. Nature here, with today’s puzzling fact.

As you can see from the little video, the mother wolf spider carries her babies on her back; and if she knows how many there are, that’s more than I will ever know.

What you don’t see is this: if one of the babies should fall off while Mommy is on the move, she will stop and find that baby and put it back on her back. Please excuse the awkward sentence.

Now, how does she know that one of those innumerable baby spiders has fallen off her back? It’s not like any of the others can cry out, “Mommy! Willie fell off again!”

If there’s anybody out there who can explain this to us, we’re all ears.

Sanity Break: Bush Baby

What–you thought that was Master Yoda, from Star Wars? Good heavens, no! Master Yoda’s just a know-it-all; this is a bush baby.

My wife has always wanted to cuddle a bush baby, but they seem to be in short supply around these parts.

Big Lizard Makes Nice Pet (Sometimes)

The iguana in this video reminds me of my own iguana who was my pet for 17 years. I always fed him by hand. He had a passion for red foods, like strawberries, watermelon, or tomatoes, and if one was painted in color on the dish he was using, he would try to eat it.

Iguanas are social animals, and if you get one that’s too young to have formed any bad habits, and constantly handle it and interact with it, that iguana will grow up into a nice pet like the one pictured here. Mine was as gentle as a lamb, and almost as large. A baby could have safely played with him.

Warning: Do not treat a full-grown iguana with disrespect. A friend of mine had a very big iguana whom he had not properly socialized: this critter could be mean. And sneaky, too. One day my friend picked him up and stuck his tongue out at him.

Chomp!

Sorry, but I got quite a laugh out of that.

Walking Tall (You Don’t Have to Be Human)

Look at all these different animals walking around on their hind legs. What–they look kind of clumsy? So let’s see how you look on all fours.

Video Treat: Horses Can Be Fun

For those of you who are getting tired of cat and dog videos, may I present… horses! Really, I never knew horses could have as much fun as these are having. Makes you want to be a cowboy!

Video Treat: Cats & Dogs & Babies

Boy, some babies really do love cats and dogs! And some cats and dogs really do love babies.

I don’t know about you, but this video just about makes me wish I could be a baby again and see how my cats treat me.
