‘Be Thou My Vision’

Do you love old-fashioned hymns? They don’t get much more old-fashioned than this, from 8th-century Ireland–and still beautiful, still blessing us today. Be Thou My Vision, sung here by the Lebanon County Youth Chorus.

‘Be Thou My Vision’ (Fountainview Academy)

This ancient Irish hymn, thirteen hundred years old if it’s a day, is still loved worldwide. This rendition is by four kids from Fountainview Academy.

If you’re new here, and would like to have me post one of your favorite hymns–just ask.

‘Be Thou My Vision’ (Nathan Pacheco)

I liked this rendition of the hymn so much, I played it twice–Be Thou My Vision, sung by Nathan Pacheco. When this hymn was first sung, Charlemagne was a little boy. An ancient Irish hymn, from the eighth century. Still very much loved today.

By Request, ‘Be Thou My Vision’

There have been a lot of proud and mighty enterprises that were supposed to last a thousand years, but didn’t. This ancient Irish hymn, Be Thou My Vision, has them all beat by a long shot: first sung in the 8th century, still loved today.

Requested by Joshua, sung by Maranatha, and in time for St. Patrick’s Day.

‘Be Thou My Vision’

Be Thou My Vision, this ancient Irish hymn (8th century!), has long been one of my favorites. I don’t know who’s performing it here: well done, whoever you are. Now the hymn will be with me throughout the day. Do they ever stay with you?

By Request, ‘Be Thou My Vision’

Requested by Joshua, Be Thou My Vision, performed by Anthony Way–this ancient Irish hymn was composed in the 700s and is still going strong today. I think it might be the most frequently requested hymn on this blog.

‘Be Thou My Vision’

Talk about staying power, this ancient Irish hymn has it–some thirteen centuries worth. This is the hymn that was the first to come to me today: Be Thou My Vision, performed by 4Him. Lyrics are provided so you can sing along. If you can do it without choking up, you’re made of sterner stuff than I am. Set design by God the Father.

‘Be Thou My Vision’ (Van Morrison)

I couldn’t find a performance of this hymn by “Ron and Kelly”–in fact, I couldn’t find Ron and Kelly–but I couldn’t resist the video that went along with this one: views of the ancient Conmacnoise Monastery in Ireland. Beautiful!

Be Thou My Vision is an Irish hymn of the eighth century, but this monastery, founded by St. Claran in the sixth century, was already old when the hymn was first sung.

Today this hymn is still being sung all over the world, and there are still services conducted at the monastery.

‘Be Thou My Vision’

This ancient Irish hymn, Be Thou My Vision, will probably be the oldest song in your hymnal: it’s from the 8th century. Sung here by the Lebanon County Youth Choir.

‘Be Thou My Vision’ (Norton Hall Band)

Be Thou My Vision has been one of my favorite hymns ever since I first heard it, as a boy. But it’s a lot older than that. This Irish hymn is from the Eighth Century. Think about that. It was 300 years old when William the Conqueror set sail for England. And it can be performed with modern instruments and still lose absolutely nothing in the translation–as proved here by the Norton Hall Band. I would very much like for this particular hymn to stay with me all day today.
