‘O God, Our Help in Ages Past’

Don’t worry–I’m only here so early because I wanted to ride my bike before it got too hot.

This fine old hymn by Isaac Watts, O God, Our Help in Ages Past–would you believe we used to sing this at assembly, in high school? That was before the Supreme Court realized how much harm Jesus Christ does us.

For the love of God, if your children are in a public school, please get them out of there.

Bonus Hymn, ‘Jesus Shall Reign’

Couldn’t make up my mind which of two hymns to post this morning, so I’ve decided to post them both.

Jesus Shall Reign, by Isaac Watts–I’d never heard this one before, and it’s a blessing to have discovered it. Thank you, my Father in Heaven!

‘O, God, Our Help in Ages Past’

Turn up the volume and sing along–this wonderful, 300-year-old hymn by Isaac Watts (not Springsteen), O God Our Help in Ages Past.

This is yet another hymn we used to sing in assembly at high school, before the times got so bad and the wicked took over the country.

Encore, ‘Am I a Soldier of the Cross’

This is the hymn that’s been in my mind lately–Am I a Soldier of the Cross, by Isaac Watts, sung here by Andy Kenway… against the stark beauty of the Scottish countryside.

Listen to the words. Lyrics like these are not in fashion nowadays: “Saints… shall conquer tho’ they die.” Or, as St. Paul put it, “Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors, through him that loved us” (Romans 8:37).

By Request, ‘Jesus Shall Reign Where’er the Sun’

Before we wade into the river of decay that is the news, let’s fortify ourselves with a hymn–Jesus Shall Reign Where’er the Sun, written by Isaac Watts in 1719.

Sorry, we have no Beyonce today.

Thank you, Laura, for requesting it.

Look at the accompanying pictures, by the way: clean, wholesome, decent, hard-working, small-town, Christian America–paying the bills, every day, for leaders who despise and mock them.

‘Transgender Preacher’–Mene, Mene, Tekel, Upharsin

Before we blame everything on politics, let’s consider America’s mainline, flatline, liberal, limpin’ lump o’ brickdust churches.

Calvary Baptist Church in Washington, D.C., ordained a man as a woman because he says he’s a woman, dresses in women’s clothing, and evangelizes for homosexuality ( http://www.nowtheendbegins.com/transgender-baptist-preacher-says-angel-of-reason-prompted-sex-switch/ ).

This lost soul, whose every chromosome is still as male as it was from the moment of his conception, recently told a gathering of jidrools that some “Angel of Reason” told him the Bible was wrong, all wrong, in all its teachings on sexual morality.

Y’know what else he said? Here, let me quote him. This is priceless, and it tells us everything we need to know about his theology and that of the churches who “welcome” and “affirm” him.

“My hymnal has a lot less Isaac Watts and Fanny Crosby, but it’s full of Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Tupac, and Beyonce.”

There is nothing I can add to that.

By Request, ‘I Sing the Mighty Power of God’

Linda, you asked for it, so here it is, the Ball Brothers performing I Sing the Mighty Power of God–written by Isaac Watts in 1715 and still going strong today.

Encore, ‘I Sing the Mighty Power of God’

I don’t know about you, but I need a hymn this morning. I think I may have posted this one some months ago, but it’s the one I want just now: I Sing the Mighty Power of God, with words by the old master, Isaac Watts, published in 1715.

Please feel free to request hymns to be posted on this blog. Lately everybody’s stopped doing that. I don’t know why. This fallen world hasn’t picked itself up and straightened itself out in the meantime.

Let me hear from you!

Hymn, ‘Joy to the World’

By reader request, here’s Joy to the World, with printed lyrics.

Did you know those lyrics were by Isaac Watts, early in the 19th century? I didn’t know that.

I remember we always used to sing this in Spanish class, to Spanish lyrics, back when public schools allowed the celebration of Christmas: Paz en el mundo, pax y amor…

The times are evil, O Lord: but Christ is come into the world, to cast out the prince of this world.

Move us to sing louder!

Hymn, ‘Am I a Soldier of the Cross’

Hard times are here for Christians, and harder times are coming. We’ll need courage to get through them. We’ll need faith.

But greater is He that is in us than he that is in the world. God loved the world, and sent His Son to save it. We belong to Him, and He will not lose us.

This is an ancient hymn, with lyrics by Isaac Watts. Listen to this hymn: listen to the words, and don’t be daunted by the video.

Those stones mark victory.
