Instead of More Nooze (Bonus Hymn)

Suddenly I couldn’t bear to post the nooze item I had originally scheduled for this slot. It’s Fourth of July, it’s a holiday: who wants to hear from our decrepit ruling class? It’d be nice if we showed some independence on Independence day.

Instead of nooze, I felt a passion for this hymn, this good old-fashioned hymn–Shall We Gather at the River, sung by Burl Ives.

How about that? I feel better already.

By Request, ‘My Church, My Church’

Patty doesn’t often request a hymn, although I never say “no.” But this old hymn, and the simplicity and warm prettiness of its piano accompaniment–well, I couldn’t say no to this one: My Church, My Church, My Dear Old Church.

And if you’d like to see the lyrics, here they are:

By Request, ‘In the Name of Jesus We Have the Victory’

We continue our own small contribution to the Revival with a hymn request from Phoebe: In the Name of Jesus We Have the Victory. I don’t know who performs this bluegrass version, but I’m sure the bad guys do not like it.

‘Shall We Gather at the River?’

There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God… Psalm 46:4

I think that must be the river featured in this hymn–Shall We Gather at the River?, sung here by Burl Ives. Sweet old-fashioned holiness.

‘O Worship the King’

No requests this morning, so I guess I’ll just go with one of my favorites–O Worship the King, performed by Maddy Prior and the Carnival Band.

If you’re new here: anyone can request a hymn, and I try to post them all. Just mention it in a comment anywhere on the blog.

‘Throw Out the Lifeline’

I can’t help it, I love the old-fashioned hymns: like this one from 1888, Throw Out the Lifeline, performed by Nathan (autoharp) and Lyle (guitar). Been a long time since I posted this!

‘Brighten the Corner Where You Are’

There are people who just do it: you can’t help feeling better when they’re around. But I think as Christians we ought to try to do that on purpose. That’s the message of this hymn, isn’t it? (Yes, I know there are people who have a black cloud on a leash and take it everywhere they go. But that wouldn’t make for much of a hymn!)

Performed by Nathan and Lyle, at home: Brighten the Corner Where You Are.

Hymn: ‘I Love to Tell the Story’

Start your day with Jesus and His love. This old hymn was a favorite in our church, when I was a boy.

I don’t go to that church anymore because it has been changed, and not for the better. But it was a wonderful church to grow up in, before it got changed, and I find that the older I get, the fresher are my memories of it.

This hymn has been with me all week. It’s a good companion.

Hymn: ‘Wonderful Words of Life’

Here’s another one from my Sunday school days, if I can get the video to work. Suddenly I’m having trouble with that.

“Wonderful Words of Life” is another old-fashioned hymn that only needs a piano to play it and a voice to sing it. We have provided the piano and the lyrics.

Sorry: the video refuses to display, you have to click on it. Don’t blame it on me. It’s stupid computer stuff.

Later: As you can see, now I have a video that works. For no reason I know of, or can imagine, I now have to use youtube, the Bing.com videos I’ve been using no longer work. But of course that has nothing to do with the business at hand, which is to make a joyful noise unto the Lord.

Bonus Hymn: ‘One More River to Cross’

My wife and I have been trying to nail down this old hymn for quite some time. Let’s see if it works.

There are other versions, but they’ve all been hillbillied to death. I like to keep it simple.

Okay, here goes… One More River to Cross.
