WordPress: ‘In the Future’

WordPress is still telling me they’ll fix my problem SOMETIME IN THE FUTURE. This wonderfully reassuring promise has inspired me to write a song… to the tune of The Village People’s classic, In the Navy.

In the Future

you can do your freakin’ work!

In the Future

you can sit there like a jerk!

In the Future

WordPress leaves in you the lurch

In the Future!

In the Future, at some undetermined date/ In the Future, WordPress swears it will be great/ In the Future, O fanabla, I can’t wait/ In the Future!

In the Future, when they change around your blog/ In the Future, when they treat you like a dog/ In the Future, when they need someone to flog… It’s you!

Now I Can’t View My Own Posts!

Well! Last night I could easily refer back to anything I’d ever posted here.

And today I can’t!

Ya see, WordPress decided to hit its users with some [trumpet fanfare] *changes* that nobody asked for… and it appears those didn’t turn out quite as well as expected. Who do they think they are–Congress?

I have been assured that they will try to restore normalcy sometime [another trumpet fanfare] **In The Future**! I know that’s supposed to make me feel better, but it doesn’t. The future could be, uh, like someday far away when the sun runs out of fuel .

I’m supposed to take my blood pressure in the morning. I haven’t bothered to, today. What would be the point?

Well, I guess, *for the foreseeable FUTURE*, I’ll just have to remember every cotton-pickin’ word I’ve ever written. That would be easy if I were a hedgehog or an ashtray. As a literate human being who makes his living by writing lots of stuff, not so easy.

Lord, give me strength!

On a Slippery Slope with Kittens

So I’m all mellow and calm as I go to post this nice cat video–and then WordPress tells me I’m gonna get a “new editor” for a “new layout” and that’s the top of my head they’re scraping off the ceiling. No! No! No new stuff! I can barely manage the old stuff that I’m used to. Who asked for anything new around here? Not me! No, no, no, I will most emphatically not try “our new editor,” no way, why can’t you people just leave me alone, what have I ever done to you??? Excuse me while I scream.

Ping-backs, Anyone?

There is an option available on my editing page, next to “Allow Comments,” that says “Allow Ping-backs and Trackbacks.” Sometimes a perverse spirit tries to tempt me into clicking that. I am deterred by the thought that if I click that option, WordPress will accuse me of “writing code” and something terrible will happen to this blog. All I know about writing code is that I must never do it. Oh, brother–what would happen if I accidentally clicked “Allow Pingbacks and Trackbacks” instead of “Allow Comments”? (He shudders.)

I’ve looked up “pingbacks,” but nothing that I’ve read has given me an understanding of what a pingback is. My wife tried, this morning, to read me an instructional post about pingbacks, but I kept getting hopelessly lost, two sentences into it. “Something terrible will happen if I try it,” I said. Eventually she agreed.

So there are no Ping-backs here, let alone Trackbacks, nor are there ever likely to be any. For all I know, a Ping-back will result in microscopic blue type on a grey background, virtually invisible. Or it might cause the rest of my hair to fall out. Unlike Elfego Baca, this blog does not have nine lives. So I have to be careful with the only one it’s got.

‘Comments Have Been Disabled’

The WordPress gremlins are already at work this morning, disabling comments on every post as soon as I post it. I’ve already had to correct this on three posts, and I expect to have to do it on this one, too.

Hey, everybody! Let’s be super-smart! Let’s all hook our minds up to one great big super-smart computer!

Better living through imbecility…

(Yup, I was right. WordPress automatically disabled the comments for this post. I have corrected that. And so yet another unnecessary step is added to the process of posting an item on this blog.)

Aaaah, Computers!

For the benefit of new readers, each day I like to re-post a “best of” item from a few years ago.

But I wasn’t allowed to do that today. Maybe I can’t do it anymore.

Why? Because, says WordPress, “Your bookmarklet has been deprecated.”

What??? What in thunderation is that supposed to mean? Does any normal person know what that means? Trying to find out from WordPress would take hours, and I don’t have the time. I hate losing this feature of my blog.

Grrrrrrrrrr!
