Animals in Overdrive

Everything’s in this video! A parrot who does card tricks. Ricocheting cats. An emu who trips over the sidewalk. And a pair of parrots who sing a duet. Well, all right, it comes up short on the axolotl front–but then so does Ye Olde Shoppe of Curious Curios in Scurveyshire.

Little Birds with Big Personalities

I’ve always had a soft spot for parakeets. Maybe it’s the way they keep falling into glasses of water. Or trying to hitch rides on tennis balls. They give the impression of being willing to try just about anything once. And they play. I like that in an animal.

This Dog’s a Chick Magnet

Actually, the dachshund in this video seems to be a magnet for all kinds of baby birds, especially ducklings–and rabbits, too.

My dog Rags used to eat birds. He’d leave some food in his dish and pretend to go to sleep, and then ambush the birds when they came down for a nibble. But apparently that sort of mind-set isn’t universal among dogs. I would have rather Rags had left the birds alone.

Cats Being Good with Birds

How do these parrots and parakeets know the cats won’t hurt them–even when they go out of their way to tease and bother kitty? Like, it would be soooo easy to be turned into an expensive mouthful of feathers!

Well, okay, some of those grey parrots are as big or bigger than the kittens they’re playing with: and they don’t hurt the kittens, although I’m sure they could.

The more you watch animals, the more surprises you get.

And Good Morning to You…

You can’t do much better than a pet who can play games with you and talk. All right, it’s only peek-a-boo–but how badly would you want a cockatiel who could beat you at chess?

Thanks to Patty’s friend Carol for this sweet video.

Crazy Critters

One of these video clips reminds me of the old Babylonian folk song, “Thar’s a Mayfly Moltin’ on My Knee.”

Then there’s the cockatoo cleaning out the sock drawer, and the chuckwalla who gets himself stuck in a knothole. And the hummingbird who wants to nest in some guy’s hair.

You just never know what to expect from animals.

Cardinals in the Snow

Mr. Nature here. Somehow the combination of bright red cardinals, pure white snow, and green pine boughs strikes me as irresistibly Christmasy. I’ll bet I’m not the only one, either.

God’s handiwork is all around us, all the time, sometimes whispering, sometimes singing, sometimes shouting, “God is nigh! God is nigh.”

Operatic Animals

It takes all kinds of critters to get a man the jitters–especially when they’re in full voice. Like, somebody’s pet gecko is a touch-me-not–and what was that fox trying to tell us?

When we used to have our vacations at the shore, there was a bird that came out late at night and made noises like a Friday the Thirteenth soundtrack. We never could find out what kind of bird it was.

It is said the town of Bismuth, Texas, has a Hereford bull that doubles as an auctioneer, but I don’t believe it.

Turkey Turnabout

Nice day, nice suburban neighborhood, man takes his wife for a stroll in her wheelchair–and the wildlife objects! And escorts them out.

I’ve heard Ben Franklin wanted the wild turkey, not the bald eagle, for our national bird, because the turkey is more valiant than the eagle. The wild turkey takes no guff from anyone; and if you’ve never seen one before, and then come upon one suddenly–well, it’s quite startling.

Ducks Rule

Who’s the boss of the barnyard? The cat? The rooster? The dog? Well, it turns out it’s the duck. Who would’ve thought it?

A few of the ducks in this video I suspect of being geese, and we know how tough geese are, so they shouldn’t count. Besides… these ducks don’t need any help.
