This hymn popped into my head today, and it doesn’t have much of a presence on youtube. I would like to hear a full choir belting it out, backed up by a really big pipe organ. But I’m also happy with a simple piano version.
Oh, the news stories out there are just so bad… and I’ve gotta cover it. Well, nobody ever said it’d be easy.
By reader request–and I don’t know who these performers are, but they do a lovely job.
I’m also not altogether sure I’ve got the hymn that was actually requested. So, Jaroc, let me know if this was the one you wanted. If not, I’ll go back for another look.
Before we get involved with any of the uniformly bad news of this evil age, here are some ordinary people in their church, singing a well-known, classic hymn. If you’re a Christian, you’ve heard it many times–and sung it, too.
But I am old enough now to know that sometimes it’s the ordinary things that really matter, that go straight to your heart.
God made us that way–and how unsearchable is His wisdom, and His ways past finding out! Praise the Sovereign Lord, who has already marked on His calendar the date for the destruction of all the evils of this world. Their pride will vanish in the blink of an eye; and if we seek for any trace of their glory, we will not find it.
P.S.–The hymn shop is open 24/7! Don’t be shy–tell me your favorite hymns, so we can all share them. Take advantage of this many-times-only offer today!
This Welsh melody is traditionally called Cwm Rhondda and has various renderings into English. I’ve posted it once as Bread of Heaven. This is a very popular hymn and a good way to start our day. This is another one you can really belt out–and should.
I don’t mean to turn into a Christian DJ or something like that, but suddenly these hymns seem mighty important. We live in an anti-Christian age, in a Christian country that is rapidly being de-Christianized, debauched, and debased before our very eyes.
Hymns are a way of connecting with our God, and the time has come to sing them louder, louder, every day.
No lyrics, just the organ. Think Isaiah 6: “…I saw also the Lord sitting on a throne… And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts: the whole earth is full of His glory.” And Revelation 4: “[A] throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne… And the four beasts… rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.”
My editor, Susan, has asked for this hymn, In Christ Alone. The first time I tried to post it this morning, Pete Rose came up instead. But I think I’ve got that straightened out. I’ll know in a minute or two.
That picture of Jesus–we always had it in our home, when I was growing up. Indeed, I saw it in a lot of homes, and Sunday school classrooms. I have no idea who painted it, or when.
Y’know, my folks weren’t theologians, they never thought of holding family Bible study. But oh, boy, we grew up knowing who our Savior was! To this day I would rejoice if My Lord were as solidly real to me now as He was when I was six years old.
Confound it, there go the eyes again. Must be the stuff the doctor put in them this morning.
This ancient irish hymn (8th century) is one of my all-time favorites. Readers keep asking for it and I keep playing it. There are so many variations on it: I hope you like this harp and violin arrangement by the Webb Family. I wish it had lyrics–but with this hymn you almost don’t need the lyrics. Let the Holy Spirit sing it to you.
