‘On This Day Earth Shall Ring’ (‘Personent Hodie’)

(Waddaya mean, posting a Christmas hymn on the second day of March?)

Two reasons. First, this was the first hymn that popped into my head today. And second: I almost totally missed this past Christmas, and I wasn’t all that far from dying. Certainly I had no strength to do up a Christmas tree.

I hope and pray we’ll all be well by the time Christmas rolls around again.

I’d hate to miss another one.

‘My Love’s an Arbutus’

It was my custom, for years, to post this beautiful song around Christmas-time, as a present to my readers. With all the chaos here lately, I’d completely forgotten it. Until today.

So here it is: My Love’s an Arbutus, sing by the Fairhaven Singers conducted by Charles V. Stanford.

It makes a brief and lovely appearance in 1951’s Scrooge with Alistair Sim.

By Request, ‘Christmas is Always’

Yes, it’s still Christmas around here, folks.

Requested by Erlene, sung by Donna Roberson: Christmas is Always.

I wish I could borrow some of that scenery.

By Request, ‘Son of God’

Sorry, no nooze today. I invited readers to request it, but got no takers. So we’re doing Christmas songs and a little bit of other stuff.

Requested by Phoebe: Son of God, by Michael W. Smith

(I think I have time to have a cigar…)

By Request, ‘What Child Is This?’

Requested by Phoebe: What Child Is This?, sung by Chris Tomlin. So many lovely versions of it! This is one of them.

We’ll never post all the Christmas carols–but let’s post as many as we can.

By Request, ‘Gloria’

Several of you wanted to hear this today–a most unusual Christmas carol, performed by Michael W. Smith: Gloria. First nominated by SemperSoloDeoGloria

I got up a bit early today (very bad night!), so let’s see how I handle this blog.

By Request, ‘We Three Kings’

I love this carol! And I’m so glad Phoebe requested it: We Three Kings, performed with mucho gusto by Hugh Jackman, David Hobson, and Peter Cousen.

And now it’s time for root beer and a movie… ’cause I’m running out of gas.

By Request, ‘O Little Town of Bethlehem’

How could I have forgotten to post this? Thank you, Phoebe, for requesting it: Nat King Cole sings O Little Town of Bethlehem. (Anybody got a tissue?)

By Request, ‘Hark! The Herald Angels Sing’

Wow! This blew me away. I’ve got to wipe my eyes.

Requested by SemperSoloDeoGloria, Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, sung by Amy Grant Just beautiful: I’m sure the LORD is pleased.

‘Jesu Joy of Man’s Desiring’

As far back as I can remember, you heard this piece of music at Christmastime–even on TV. I’m not sure it has anything specifically to do with Christmas, but somehow they belong together.

Jesu Joy of Man’s Desiring, by Johann Sebastian Bach, performed by the New London Symphony Orchestra in 1961, Leopold Stokowski conducting… another one of those memories that lands me, 10 0r 11 years old, back in my mother’s sitting room with the snow coming down outside.

Oh, those are good memories.
