So Make with the Comments, Already!

If you want to win one of these dazzling red T-shirts, you’ve got to be in the comment contest! The legend on the shirt says, “If they have to kill us, they’ve lost. –Lee Duigon” It’s in MAGA colors, no less–and I promise it’s not blurry in real life like it is in the picture.

Just now we have some 71,500 comments. I’m thinking for a prize this noble, we ought to set the goal at 75,000.

One of life’s lessons that I’ve finally learned: in any club, organization, any activity involving a number of people, 10% of the members do 90% of whatever gets done. It’s human nature. Heck, if everybody who reads or follows this blog were to comment, we’d hit 75,000 in just a few days. So I realize only a few of you will comment. Chess club, softball team, political campaign–that’s just how it is.

More importantly, though, a lot of you have shrewd, witty, interesting, informative things to say, and it profits us to read you. The more, the merrier!

We’ve Ordered the Prizes

Well, we’ve ordered these shirts as prizes in our comment contests–bright red, Xtra Large T-shirts, emblazoned with the motto, “If they have to kill us, they’ve lost.”

It would be nice if our readership numbers recovered and we had a lot of commenters competing for the prize. Hardly anybody here this morning. The numbers crashed on Jan. 18 and have never bounced back. I have no idea why that happened. Nor do I know what to do about it. WordPress swears it ain’t their fault.

Anyway… The shirts’ll be here in a few days, and we’ll make one a prize for posting Comment No. 75,000. At the rate we’re going, civilizations will rise and fall by the time we get there.

Well, it’s a cool shirt, we hope you like it.

We’ve Got a New Prize!

I know, I know–10% of the readers make 90% of the comments. So we try to pump it up with comment contests, by which I show our appreciation for those 10%ers.

To this end, we have ordered a new prize: a red T-shirt bearing the quote, “If they have to kill us, they’ve lost.” Our thanks to Phoebe for making the suggestion!

So, next time there’s a comment contest, the winner will receive one of these shirts. They’re all Xtra Large. If that’s too big for you, well, you can always use it for a nightshirt. But a lot of people like their T-shirts to be roomy.

We’ve just passed 70,000 comments, so I’m thinking 75,000 for the goal of our next contest. Stay tuned!

Comment Contest: You Could Win A New Head!

G’day! Byron the Quokka here, and we have almost, nearly, just-about reached that historic milestone of 70,000 comments on this blog. So close! To wit, as of a minute ago, only 134 comments to go! Once upon a time you readers could rack that up in one good day!

And as if that weren’t excitement enough, get a load of this prize–

How about that for a conversation piece? Your neighbors will just plotz with envy when they see this huge stone head on your front lawn. There’s this place in Turkey where they’ve got all these heads just lying around, having fallen off some ancient statues. They’ll never miss just one! I mean, it’s not like they’re doing anything with ’em…

Or you can settle for an autographed copy of Lee’s book, His Mercy Endureth Forever, or even hold out for the next book, The Wind from Heaven, which hasn’t been published yet but should be, soon.

G’day–I hope! Byron the Quokka here.

I really hoped we’d have a comment contest winner yesterday, but it didn’t happen. And today, so far, we have zero comments!

Did I mention the winner, the reader who posts Comment No. 65,000, gets an autographed paddle ball? Like this:

275 Quokka Photos and Premium High Res Pictures

Just to let you know: Lee has sent out the comment contest prizes to “Watchman” and Ina. I don’t know what the holdup was, they’re only books. Meanwhile, behind me there’s another one of those bicycles that somebody left just standing there, obviously they don’t want it–what a swell prize that would make! I have also suggested that maybe the winner ought to win a boat, but he won’t listen.

P.S.–Some readers want to know why I’m called Byron the Quokka, when I live on Rottnest Island with all the other quokkas. It would be like calling some guy who lives in New York Alfie the Human.

Well, crikey–how would you like to have a middle name like “the”? I can’t answer the question and it would only exasperate me to try. Let some mysteries remain mysteries!

 

Wahoo! Here Comes the Book

Huzzah! (Can’t say “wahoo” twice.) I’ve just received my author’s copies of Bell Mountain No. 12, His Mercy Endureth Forever. Now I can mail Watchman and Ina their comment contest prizes.

Dig that cover by Kirk DouPonce! Is that cool, or what? That’s Ellayne being attacked by the giant Ice Age hyena–and if you want to know what happens, you’ve got to read the book. The prehistoric hyena was an awesome predator that mostly ate rhinos. The horse is Dulayl, who’s been with us since Book 1.

I haven’t yet gotten the sign to start writing Book No. 14, and meanwhile No. 13, The Wind from Heaven, has to be edited; and we have to dream up a cover for it. Busy, busy, busy! But it’s the kind of busy I like.

G’day! Byron the Quokka here, with just 73 comments to go toward that 60,000-comment milestone–and a winner in our current comment contest.

I thought it might be nice to make a boat the prize, but Lee is still thinking in terms of an autographed copy of Bell Mountain No. 12, His Mercy Endureth Forever.

It’s taking a long time to get this book printed, I guess because everything’s been slowed down by The Great Quarantine Etc. We still owe a copy to “Watchman,” who won the last comment contest. If Mercy still hasn’t been printed by the time we reach 60,000, you can ask for an earlier book in the series. We’re out of Bell Mountain though, so don’t ask for the first book. To see them all, go to the home page and click “Books.” I don’t know how anybody can resist that giant hyena, though. We don’t have those on Rottnest Island–which is probably a good thing.

Well, one more blog post this afternoon, and then we’ll do some editing of No.13, The Wind from Heaven.
