Video Treat:Kittens’ First Time

Here are kittens discovering that the world is full of amazing things they never expected.

I love it when kittens first find out that they can make puffy tails and run all around, doing it. My cats don’t bother to fluff their tails out anymore, but they had a grand week or so when they first learned how to do it.

Cat Wake-up Call

For some reason cats don’t like you to sleep if they’re not sleeping. So here are some cats employing various tactics for waking up their owners.

My cat Henry used to get very upset if the phone rang and we didn’t answer it. You know, sometimes you are engaged in something that simply won’t allow you to go to the phone. But Henry accepted no excuses. “I don’t care what you’re doing! Answer the phone!”

And he used to wake my wife by putting his nose against her eyes.

This is Great! Smart Cats

Maybe I should’ve saved this for tomorrow, but I couldn’t wait to share it with you.

Here are cats doing some very clever thinking, plus one thought that was not so clever. I like this because it isn’t someone setting up situations: this is cats being cats.

My old friend Ed used to have a cat who used the people toilet instead of a litter box; but he never could get her to flush after using. Better not to try, probably.

Cats Saying ‘Hello’

Since the glory days of the Indus Valley civilization, certain people have tried to teach their cats to talk. Perhaps this accounts for the collapse of the Indus Valley civilization. I mean, my cats can say “Meow” and that’s about it.

Anyway, here are a bunch of cats trying to say “Hello.” A few of them come fairly close to doing so. It is widely believed that Goethe had a cat that could say “Gesundheit,” but I’m afraid I cannot prove it.

Bonus Video: Cats and Cucumbers

(Thanks to reader LifeIsGood for suggesting this video)

Here’s something I never knew about cats: some of them freak out at the sight of a cucumber.

Huh? What gives? Why should a cucumber, just lying on the floor, startle a cat?

We’ll never know.

Video Treat: Lazy Cats

I have deleted the video of the kitten in the tubful of water. Some of you thought it wasn’t nice. Having watched it again, I yield to your judgment.

Here, instead, are lazy cats who have found ways to drink water without troubling themselves to get up. Sounds like some people I know.

Sanity Break: Cats Acting Like People

Don’t worry–it’s not about cats lying, running for public office and then betraying the cats who voted for them. Cats will never learn to imitate the finer points of fallen humanity.

But they can imitate certain things they see us do. My cat Henry used to try to horn in when I was playing Strat-O-Matic Baseball; but his idea of the game was to flip the little plastic men to the floor and bat them under the bookcase, and I couldn’t have that. You should have heard the back-talk he’d give me.

Anyway, let’s unwind. Join me in enjoying these cats.

Sanity Break: Cats and Babies

You would think a lot could go wrong with that combination, but cats seem to hit it off with babies. Both may be smarter than they’re given credit for.

Sanity Break: Guilty Cats

I feel the need for a cat break.

Here are cats that show every sign of being upset when they’ve been caught doing a no-no. Watching the one cat shred the roll of toilet paper, I wonder whether Mt. Vesuvius has been unjustly blamed for the destruction of Pompeii. Maybe it was cats.

More Funny Cats–Hooray!

Once again we turn to our cats for a dose of sanity.

This red cat in the sink reminds me of our cat, Buster–who once managed to turn a pair of my wife’s panties into a kind of toga, and then posted himself in the living room window for everyone to see.

I must admit he never balanced a Q-tip on his nose, though.
