‘Rise Up, O Men of God’

Here’s a hymn to get you cranked over this morning–Rise Up, O Men of God, by the Robert Shaw Chorale.

In Sunday school some of us used to sing, “Wise up, O men of God!” We were just dumb kids, but there might’ve been some wisdom in our choice of words.

Let’s Hear from You!

Listening Ears & Vocabulary —

Hey, I’ve found a new hymn by the Voice of Eden–and I will post it today if you guys want to hear it. I’ve never heard it before, but I’m sure it’ll be great.

But I do want to know your pleasure! This blog needs waking up! King COVID has cast a spell of drowsiness over the whole world, drowsiness and forgetfulness–don’t tell me you haven’t caught yourselves forgetting to do certain errands that are important but you forgot them anyway. That phenomenon is spreading all over the earth.

We can fight it with hymns! Our King Jesus Christ is mightier than theirs.

As another hymn puts it, “Rise up, O men [and women!] of God.” And as we sometimes sang in Sunday school, with more understanding than we could have realized, “Wise up, O men of God.”

‘Rise Up, O Men of God’

Some of us goofy boys in Sunday school used to sing this as “Wise up, O men of God,” never guessing how much good sense that amended lyric made. Out of the mouths of babes and sucklings…

In Sunday school we used to sing this as “Wise up, O men of God.” Out of the mouths of babes and sucklings…

But of course it’s really the classic hymn, Rise Up, O Men of God. This performance is from a record cut in 1958 by the Robert Shaw Chorale.

Hymn, ‘Rise Up, O Men of God’

If the Church ever needed to rise up, that time is probably now. Before our glorious national leaders make sodomy compulsory, or set up an image of Obama to be worshiped.

I chose this little version of the hymn because it’s easy to understand the words, albeit not so easy to understand the pictures.

All right, those who favor a wooden-headed literal interpretation of Romans 13 (“If the Powers that Be tell you to slaughter all the babies, then you gotta slaughter all the babies”) won’t like it.

But for the sane people out there, it’s time we thought seriously about the best way to rise up against the purposeful wickedness of our own Powers that Be.

P.S.–Upon further examination, this video seems to be a Mormon production. But I will let it be. The hymn is a Christian hymn, and that’s a fact.
