Encore, ‘Behold the Mountain of the Lord’

Yes, I know, I’ve posted this old Scottish hymn many times–Behold the Mountain of the Lord, sung by Godfrey Birtill. I love it, and I love how it articulates our Christian hope.

In the old Planet of the Apes movie, Charlton Heston, playing an astronaut, says of the world he came from, our world, “Somewhere out there, there has to be something better.”

But our hope is in the Lord, who made the heavens and the earth–and we don’t have to go “out there.” For the world was perfect once, as God made it, and He will heal it, He will restore that which has been lost, He will repair that which has been broken: for the Lord hath spoken it.

Dogs Who Say No

Say no to baths, say no to those freakin’ collars the humans put on you when you’ve had surgery, say no to whatever they’re sellin’–we are dogs, we are man’s best friend, and we don’t gotta take this guff no more!

The howling huskie illustrates one significant way in which turtles are better pets than dogs, though.

Bonus Hymn, ‘Jesus Saves’

I love this hymn, and right around here, right about now, there’s a whole lot of saving needed. Feels like the rowboat’s filling up with water. Save us, O Lord.

This is by the kids from Fountainview Academy, visiting Prague on their European tour.

‘Sweet Hour of Prayer’

We all need the Lord to carry us, sometimes. It’s raining again today, my wife is sick, I fear for my sister and a couple of dear friends, the Left is sinking its fangs into my country… and if I couldn’t pray, all this stuff would crush me flat. What do you say, folks, to prayers all around? On and off all day.

Sweet Hour of Prayer, written in 1845 and sung here by the Vagle Brothers, was one of my mother’s favorite hymns.

Kitties’ First Snow

The cats and kittens in this video are all having a blast with their first snow.

My cat, Henry, though–when I opened the door to let him out so he could enjoy his first experience with snow, he took just a step or two, then turned around and gave me a look that would have shriveled an asp; and I was glad I couldn’t translate that particular meow.

‘Holy, Holy, Holy’ (Fountainview Academy)

This is the hymn that was with me when I woke this morning, so this is the hymn I post today: and I wanted it done by the kids at Fountainview Academy, and was happy to find that available: Holy, Holy, Holy.

And don’t let the setting fool you, they’re still in Canada: Minter Gardens. Yes, it looks like a fantasy landscape. But don’t worry, it’s real.

Cuddly Cows

It’s beginning to look like I missed a lot by living in the suburbs all my life. But I should have remembered about cows! Once, when I was only five years old or so, my parents went on some sort of getaway in upstate New York. We stayed at a farm, and each day, I would go out to the stone wall in the back yard and hang out with the cows on the next-door farmer’s field. I remember showing those cows my toys, petting them, talking to them, getting licked by them (“cow kisses”), and just plain loving it. There weren’t any other kids around to play with, but who needs other kids when you’ve got cows?

We really ought to love them.

Surprise Video: Whale Shark, etc.

Sometimes the beauty of God’s handiwork moves me to tears of pure joy. There’s quite a bit of it in this video.

The whale shark is the biggest fish on earth: individuals up to 60 feet long have been reliably reported, according to Mr. Nature. It’s totally harmless, feeding entirely on plankton and floating fish eggs. No one has ever been attacked by a whale shark. Divers like to swim with them.

Going by reports from the 19th century, the whale shark was never common. It’s still rare today, and care must be taken not to drive this magnificent creature into extinction.

God won’t like it if we do.

Thank you, Lord, for creating awe and wonder.

Encore, ‘What a Friend We Have in Jesus’

Think how many times Doc Watson must have sung this hymn in public; and yet he’s still so moved by it, his voice almost breaks. What a Friend We Have in Jesus–and what a friend we need.

I’ve been taking it to him in prayer a lot, these last two days: my wife is having a very hard time with her breathing. Please unite your prayers to ours: O Jesus, thou Son of David–have mercy on us, and heal my wife. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Some Frisky Critters

A soccer-playing cow, a pole-dancing cat, and a great big possum sleeping on your shoulder–what gives? What, you mean animals aren’t just biological robots programmed to react the same way to the same things, all the time? Like, they just might have some ideas of their own?

You bet!
