‘In the Sweet By and By’

I’m a bit distressed this morning–worried about Erlene, short on sleep, and can see no end to all the doctoring. It’s not surprising this hymn hit me where I live.

In the Sweet By and By, sung by the Mennonite Singers: Christ knows where we are, and at the appointed time He will call us to Himself.

‘The Lord Is My Shepherd’

Sorry I’m late. Oh, look! Another doctor’s appointment!

The hymn is The Lord Is My Shepherd, sung by the Wells Cathedral Choir.

And now I have to go referee a fight.

‘Onward Christian Soldiers’

One doctor’s appointment this morning, another this afternoon–sorry, I’ll save the rant for later… if there is a later. Gotta hit the road in a few minutes.

Quick, a hymn! Here’s the first one that popped iuto my head: Onward Christian Soldiers, sung by the Joslin Grove Choral Society.

I hope I can come back and put up some posts. Clock is ticking!

‘How Deep the Father’s Love For Us’

This is a gorgeous hymn, it brings me to tears; it tells me, “God is nigh.” How Deep the Father’s Love For Us, by Hymns of Grace. Just lovely.

‘Am I a Soldier of the Cross?’

It’s been a long time since I’ve heard this hymn–Am I a Soldier of the Cross?, an 18th-century classic by Isaac Watts. There’s more than one melody that goes with these lyrics. I wonder how many there are.

‘Revive Us Again’

From deep in the heart of Texas, Nathan and Lyle perform Revive Us Again. This hymn goes back to 1863–our country needed revival back then.

‘Like a River Glorious’

Chemotherapy and radiation leave your memory full of holes. Up until yesterday evening, I forgot these guys–Nathan (autoharp) and Lyle (guitar), plus assorted friends on assorted instruments.

But I’ve found my way back to them today, back to sweet old hymns like this one–Like a River Glorious, from 1876.

Bonus Hymn: ‘Light of the World’

No one will mind, I suppose, if I post an extra hymn today. I had a sudden hankering for this one: Light of the World, by Charles Wesley; sung by Maddy Prior and the Carnival Band. Just longed to hear it again.

‘Down to the River to Pray’

There’s something old and cozy about this hymn, Down to the River to Pray. Here we have it sung by Southern Raised… And I can’t say I’m thrilled about the microphone being set up in the middle of the water.

‘Revive Us Again’

I don’t care for this rendition of the hymn, but my wife thought it was awesome. I yield to her judgment. Maybe you’ll like it, too.

Revive Us Again, a classic hymn by Fanny Crosby–by Dr. E. Dewy Smith and his congregation.
