‘Memory Lane’ Contest, Day 8

1991 - Collapse of the Soviet Union | Soviet union, World ...

This was very hard to believe, that morning!

I’ve got a memory for you.

Early one morning in 1989–35 years ago–I had a date to teach in St. Helena’s School. It was still dark out and I was hoping to squeeze in one more nap… when my wife came into the bedroom and announced, “There’s no more Soviet Union. The Soviet Union has collapsed.”

Whoa-ho-ho! For real? The Russian Bear, the boogieman. I grew up in the 50s and 60s, the heart of the Cold War. The USSR–kaputsky? Cuban Missile Crisis, Khrushchev saying “We will bury you.” All of that was now over?

But that’s enough from me. What about your memories? The contest’s halfway over, but it remains open to everyone, and you can enter as often as you like. Win an autographed book or a T-shirt, and the awe-struck admiration of your friends.

Mr. Machine from Ideal (1960) | Toy Tales

How many of us had this toy–Mr. Machine?

Okay, our first Memory Lane contest is under way; and first I’m going to do something that should make it easier to follow.

Each day, I’ll post a brief remindet about the contest: and to that post, readers can attach as many comments and replies as they please.

Anyone can enter. You can enter as often as you like.

Somewhere along the way, someone’s going to come up with a memory that knocks me for a loop–and that’ll be the winner of the contest. The prize is an autographed book, your choice.

We’ve already got some entries from yesterday, and I’m looking forward to seeing more–lots more.

Because memories are a good thing to share.

Has the sun set on the Day of the Blog?

In 2020 I averaged over 400 views a day. Now I’m lucky if I get 200. Why is that, do you suppose?

Some of you have blogs of your own, and I’d very much like to know if your viewership stats have gone over the falls. Is this happening simply because people aren’t into blogs anymore–or is it a more subtle means of censorship? “Just block enough of their views to discourage them, and then they’ll shut up.”

I think we very much need a social media community–especially for Christians and conservatives. I think we need each other. Don’t you?

‘The Inquiring Quokka’ (2020)

Meet the Quokka

I don’t know how, but somehow that COVID business blasted this blog’s readership and it’s still nowhere near recovering. I put Byron the Quokka on the job in 2020. I guess I’ll have to do it again.

The Inquiring Quokka

He calls this “market research.” Well, that’s what it is, for all I know. I guess it sounds better than “spinning our wheels.”

(I do wish it would stop raining here…)

What’s Your Pleasure?

(“What’s your pleasure?” said the Tree Frog…)

I’m noozed out, I’ve got physical therapy to go to this morning–and what should I post in my blog?

I’m hoping Byron the Quokka comes up with some TV listings; but boy are we wide open for reader suggestions and requests! I’ve got an open slot and I’d rather not fill it with nooze. Been doin’ that all week, and my soul is tired.

What’s your pleasure? Video? Nature? History? A progress report on my next book? (Yes, we’ve made some progress.)

I’ll be back around noon, eager to see your replies.

My right hip is a mess, looks like I have a bad case of arthritis, so Patty has signed me up for a course in physical therapy: so that’s where I was this morning. And I have to go back tomorrow.

Well, I tried assorted supplements, tried walking it off: no dice. It’s got to be physical therapy. I’ve never been a fan of calisthenics etc., but now I have to do it, like it or not. Please pray that it works.

My therapist–she’s very strong, don’t mess with her–said, at the conclusion of this rather grueling session, that I can now sit down and enjoy a cigar with a clear conscience. So I did.

And the Lord blessed me with a new character who will appear in my next book: Ozias, King Betrayed. This is Irik, a humble scholar, a lover of the Scriptures, who will be the next high priest: Obann needs him. He will play a major role in the story.

For the time being, though, let’s see if I can get this blog moving.

Friday Is Here (Finally!)

I could just plotz, I’m so tired; and there’s hardly anybody here today. I feel like word got out that I was going to give a lecture on how the Hittites managed without baseball cards and what a shame it is that a pack of baseball cards now costs $5.00 instead of 5 cents…

(No, stop, come back! I wasn’t actually going to give that lecture!)

Anyway, I’ve got to go grocery-shopping before it starts raining again… and then it’ll be time for Joe Collidge. I know you just can’t wait.

Good Friday: No Nooze

Today is Good Friday, a profoundly holy day in which we commemorate Christ’s crucifixion–a murder perpetrated by the authorities in Jerusalem (yes, Pontius Pilate: you proved to be a waste of space).

But Our Lord consented to it. Without sin Himself, He took upon Himself the sins of all humanity: He was wounded for our transgressions, and by His stripes we are healed.

In light of this, I can’t bring myself to do regular nooze reporting today. Not on Good Friday. Hold ’em over till tomorrow. The stupid stuff our fallen world is doing will still be there tomorrow. I’ve also decided this is not a day for Joe Collidge.

Hymns and prayers and Christian fellowship–that’s what we need today. It’s not business as usual: we have more pressing business up above.

‘I Thank My Readers’ (2014)

Thank You Flowers Pictures | Download Free Images on Unsplash

Ten years ago I was drawing a lot of fire. I still am, only now I go for the Delete key a lot faster than I used to.

And I am grateful to all of you who stand with me. There are a lot of jerks out there who want our scalps.

I Thank My Readers

There are times when all you can do is belt out a chorus of Men of Harlech and stand your ground. We live in such a time.

May the LORD our God sustain us.

Conking Out

I’m not used to having arthritis and I was stiff and sore all morning. It struck me as an excellent idea to go back to bed, but we couldn’t skip the grocery shopping.

I’m still terribly tired; but the sun has come out, and the prospect of a nice cigar has latched hold of me, big-time. And I guess, being conscious, I can say with some faint trace of honesty, “Well, I’m on the job. Sort of.”

By the way, I’m always thankful when readers send me nooze tips. Very often it’s something that I missed: no research staff here. So I think I’ll sit outside for an hour, try to refresh myself, and hope the tips come pouring in. Honest, I can use the help.
