‘Newsies Wonder, “Why Don’t They Love Us Anymore?”‘ (2016)

Blah-blah-blah-blah-blah!

Newsies have been singin’ the blues, these past few years, completely mystified as to why the public doesn’t seem to like or trust them anymore.

Noozies Wonder, ‘Why Don’t They Love Us Anymore?’

Gee, you could have a contest! In 25 words or less, “I no longer trust mainstream media newsies because ________.” The answer that turns me on the most wins an autographed book.

By cracky, it is a contest! Yes, let’s do it! We could use some livening up around here. Submit as many answers as you like. I’ll share them, day to day, with the readership. Let’s vent, already! They’re trying to impose another Democrat presidency on us–they deserve to get it with both barrels.

The contest starts NOW.

Stranded!

I was cut off from the Internet all day yesterday, no access at all. Verizon said “a new switch” had to be installed.

A writer feels it as a hardship when he’s kept from writing. And there I had all these nice TV listings for you.

Yes, I’m extremely late for breakfast. I want my chicken and barley soup. I’m late because sleep for me is very, very hard to come by. But weariness isn’t.

I want my cigar.

Anyway, as you can see, we’re back online. Until the next Big Tech failure.

Keep On Praying

Today I can sit down to a normal breakfast–no doctors’ appointments today. Hallelujah!

I know more than a few of you are, and have been, praying for me. I hardly know how to tell you how much I appreciate it.

But I want to take this opportunity to exhort more prayers, for more of our fellowship: prayers for Erlene, for Dave (Thewhiterabbit), and for Susan, my editor… just for starters. We need each other’s prayers.

We also need more young people joining up with us. Yo, 25-year-olds and younger! This old man is reaching out to you. Someone’s gonna be needed to take over here.

But in the meantime–pray! We can’t do without it.

Contests, Anyone?

What can I do to get readers involved here? I have a new book coming out any day now–Ozias, Prince in Peril–and maybe some kind of contest might help promote it.

And I’d like to have some fun now, in case they pack me off to the hospital later.

Comment contest? Short essay contest? Cool ideas for the next book contest? I don’t know–somebody must have a better idea than I have.

Time for a cigar… and a bit of cogitation (mustn’t waste good weather).

A Bad Word from the Doctor

Damselflies: Graceful Insects of the Garden

(I can’t bring myself to illustrate this with an appropriate image. Here’s a nice damselfly instead.)

I’m back from the doctor’s, and the word is… cancer. Two great big lumps of it. Gotta craft a treatment plan.

What do you say about a thing like this? God help me and defend me–that’s about the best I can come up with. Crikey, you turn 75 and the roof falls in. And there’s still the arthritis to deal with. That, they think they can fix.

Somehow I’ve got to get into writing mode today. That’ll help. I hope it’s not too freakin’ hot outside.

Going, Going…

I have a doctor’s appointment this morning, and have to leave in a very few minutes.  I think this is for a consultation, and they won’t be cutting me open today.

It’s making me feel a bit sick. See that? Didn’t have the oomph to find an illustration for this post.

It would be very nice to wake up and discover that this year has been only a bad dream.

I’ll Try, I’ll Try

It’s as hot as Hell’s kitchen today, and my morale is shot; but I will try to do my work. I’ll even try to write satire… but only because I feel there are satires out there that need to be written, and it might as well be by me.

I am asked, “Why a picture of a frog?” Well, why not? I’d like to relax in cool water up to my neck. And there’s something about this picture that whispers to me, “God’s on the job, He hasn’t turned away.”

First a cigar, then Joe Collidge. And I’m told the cover of Ocean of Time is ready to be joined to the book–which will probably be for sale in time for Christmas.

See you in a bit–if I don’t plotz from the heat.

If I Might Be Excused…

I’m trying to hold up my end here, but stress and stuff keep getting dumped onto the other end of the seesaw. It’s sort of preying on my mind.

Would you mind if I let go for a while, rested outside with a cigar, and then came in and watched a movie? Just came back from physical therapy… and can worry about getting kicked out if I don’t make more progress. I’m convinced the therapy will work, given time. But how much time, I don’t know.

I’ve got to go unwind. See you later.

‘Memory Lane’ Contest Winner: Katheleen

EXPLOITS: Prehistoric Inspiration | THE REMODERN REVIEW

He couldn’t get the names quite right, but what did that matter?

I did find it mighty hard to choose a winner in this contest, so many sweet memories came in. And of course that was what we were all sharing.

But I give the prize to this one, from Katheleen, about the day her uncle taught her how to play chess.

Tommy’s Pond (‘Memory Lane’ Contest, Day 11)

Scroll down to the third post, that’s where it is. As I was reading it to Patty, I broke into tears: it called back to me dear Uncle Bernie, and sitting on his lap as he watched TV with me, told me stories, and performed these clever little magic tricks that I sometimes find myself doing… seventy years later. Parents and grandparents are great, but don’t sell short your uncles and your aunts. Ours was a very close-knit family, and those old memories are priceless. I loved them and I miss them!

Katheleen, chose your prize–either the T-shirt that says “If they have to kill us, they’ve lost” (large size only: but you’ll grow into it), or one of my books, autographed, of your choice.

I’ll never forget my uncle struggling to pronounce dinosaurs’ names as he read to me from my Natural History book. It was one of many ways he had to tell us children (his brothers’ children) that he loved us.

Be sure to send me your mailing address.

I’m Back (I Hope)

Well, ain’t that swell? Now it won’t let me post any pictures.

Our computer conked out this morning, and we spent well over an hour trying to get someone to come and put it to rights. That’s supposed to happen tomorrow. Meanwhile, late this afternoon, it decided to start working again. Sort of.

I’ll try images and videos after supper. Maybe that’ll work by then.

To all of you who visited this blog anyway, regardless of our trouble–thank you, and a big hug!

(Nope–still no picture.)
