‘He’s Not a Tame Lion’

A reader chided me (on another site) yesterday to “leave the sermonizing out of it” and stick to “newsworthy” stuff. Stop talkin’ about God and just give us the nooze!

Well, here’s some news for you, sunshine: God really is God, this whole shebang belongs to Him, we are truly provoking Him to anger, and when He gets mad, watch out.

God is not an adjunct to the news. People think He’s only to be found inside a church, where you can go and visit Him once a week, as if He were a patient in a nursing home. No, not so. Actually, He’s everywhere.

So you can’t leave Him out of it, and civilization can’t just go about its business as if there were no God. Because there is.

In C.S. Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia, the children from our world are admonished, again and again, that Aslan the Great Lion, Lord of all Narnia–and for Aslan read “Jesus Christ,” the Lion of the Tribe of Judah–cannot be anticipated, manipulated, controlled, outsmarted, or, of all things, taken for granted. “He’s not a tame lion!”

No, He is not a tame lion. He will not go when we wish Him to go, nor will He stay away when we wish Him to stay away. He is not our bellhop at Hotel Earth!

He is King of Kings, Lord of Lords, ruler and origin of all Creation; and if you think the news, if you think that what’s happening in this world that He created, sustains, and owns has nothing to do with Him–

Well, think again.

Praise! ‘Our God is an Awesome God’

This is the hymn I woke up with today, which I sang to myself this morning on my bike–a song to strengthen the soul, and give courage: Our God is an Awesome God, here performed by Michael Smith in concert with the whole audience joining in.

Youtube says “comments have been disabled” for this page. Probably it’s because this video makes atheists gnash their teeth and levitate.

But this is what it makes me think of:

God is sovereign over all of His creation, and everything in it.

The wicked are exalted in this age. They walk and talk and do whatever they please, in great pride and power.

But they are only grown as great and proud as God Himself has permitted, and they will endure not one minute longer than He has ordained.

The day and hour of their destruction is already marked on God’s calendar.

For our God is indeed an awesome God.

Back from the Doctor (*sigh*)

Rush to the doctor, rush to the pharmacy, then to the supermarket, then you can try and generate a Newswithviews column…

They say I have high blood pressure.

Well, forsooth, that’s why I bought my bike in the first place; and it was doing a very nice job of lowering my blood pressure until I fell off two weeks ago.  So my arm is still messed up, I have other serious family problems which I’m not at liberty to mention here, I have enough work to keep me as busy as a one-armed paper-hanger, and on top of all that, every day I watch my country being murdered  by inches by the very persons who have a sacred duty to preserve and protect her.

Yeah, I have high blood pressure. Duh!

But I believe in the power of prayer, and I believe in God’s sovereign rule over my life and the lives of nations. And if any of you feel moved to pray for me–well, I appreciate it, and I’m convinced it’ll do me good.

I’ve Got My Books!

It’s always a big day for me when I get my author’s copies of my book. Today I got my copies of The Temple. That cover looks good! My wife is already hunkered down to read it.

You may have noticed that I’m blogging more, of late. That’s because I’m between books, and that always makes me antsy. But I know I’ll have to wait months before the Lord starts me on the next story that He wants me to tell. He knows I need that time to rest and renew my resources.

The Temple is Book No. 8 in my Bell Mountain series, and the themes remain the same throughout: God’s sovereignty over all Creation; His power to intervene in history–without abrogating our free will; how He draws individuals and nations to Himself; and how the characters learn to know and love God through obedience, through sacrifice, hard work, enduring hardship, taking risks, and loving one another.

In all of this, whether I’m writing or not writing, my one indispensable tool is God’s own word, the Bible. I want my stories to be steeped in the Bible: it’s the only way to make them valid.

If you’re new to this blog, welcome. And if all of this is new to you, a lot more information is available just by clicking “Books” at the top of this page.
