‘What Part of Christmas Don’t They Understand?’ (2014)

I wasn’t able to write a Newswithviews column this week. I worked so hard, finishing The Witch Box, that other jobs just piled up on me.

So here’s one from Christmas Day, seven years ago:

What? A Christmas column inspired by 1 Corinthians Chapter 1?

You bet.

Merry Christmas, everybody–and here’s to the day, by the grace and power of God, we get our freedom back.

The clever men at Oxford

Know all that there is to be knowed.

But they none of them know one half as much

As intelligent Mr. Toad!

When Mr. Toad brags about his intellectual attainments, we think it’s funny and we laugh, because it’s only Mr. Toad, a fictional character. But it’s not so funny when the real, live clever men at Oxford and other dives of “higher education” do the same.

Biblical Archaeology Magazine this month is advertising a book, Jesus and After, produced by the savants at University of Massachusetts at Amherst. “What lies at the bottom of the highly stratified Biblical texts from the First Century?” one asks.

Answers Stephen W. Durrant from the University of Oregon:

“The author has accomplished something rare in this outstanding book… Freed from such ‘stumbling blocks’ as the doctrines of blood atonement and bodily resurrection, the original Christian teaching shines forth with simplicity and directness.”

“For the preaching of the cross,” observed St. Paul, “is to them that perish foolishness” (I Corinthians 1:18).

So the doctrines of blood atonement and bodily resurrection are stumbling blocks? Stumbling blocks to what–getting your doctorate in “Religion”? Winning the approval of an unbelieving fallen world?

“Now if Christ be preached that he rose from the dead,” Paul continues, “how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead? But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen: and if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain… If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable” (I Cor. 15:12-14, 19).

So these sophomoric twaddlers wish to go back to some supposed “original Christian teaching” that does not provide any cleansing from sins because it jettisons the blood atonement, and does not provide any hope of resurrection–what’s left? “Be nice”? “Sharing is caring”? What kind of shabby excuse for Christianity would that be?

Seest thou a man who is wise in his own eyes? There is more hope of a fool than of him (Proverbs 26:12).

This is the kind of plop that gets taught at our seminaries, and this is why we have “clergy for choice” and “feminist clergy” and all the rest of the smorgasbord of crapola served up by left-wing pseudo-Christianity.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.

That ought to make it easy to spot the fools.

Green Party Wacko Sinks Ohio Dems

Image result for images of green space aliens

This is why we sing louder, pray harder, and work! And if the following isn’t an example of God using the weak to defeat the strong (I Corinthians 1:27), I don’t know what is.

In a special Congressional election in Ohio, into which Democrats poured tons of money, a Green Party kook who says he’s descended from space aliens from the Pleiades got 1,100 votes–enough to swing the election to the Republican candidate and retain the seat for the GOP (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6039535/Ohio-Green-Party-spoiler-candidate-remember-campaign-website.html).

Greenie Joe Manchik claimed to speak 17 “languages,” most of them fictitious, and endorsed his party’s position that “every American should be required to grow hemp.” Welcome to Pot-head Nation.

Now, we don’t want to see somebody suddenly turn up with several thousand ballots in the trunk of his car, every one of which is for the Democrat. Been there, done that, and the result was Al Franken in the Senate until he self-destructed by having his picture taken groping a woman on a plane.

But unless something like that happens again, Democrats have lost the seat and Republicans have kept it.

‘These Are They Who Have Come Out of Great Tribulation’

Foolish, isn’t it, to oppose the singing of God’s praise and the preaching of the cross against the mighty powers of a fallen world? But God likes that kind of foolishness, and uses it all the time: see I Corinthians 1.

The Gaither Vocal Band, with Ernie Haas, sings These Are They Whom Have Come Out of Great Tribulation: this is Revelation 7:14, with echoes of Hebrews 11.

I am reminded again of King Alfred’s words: “For the Lord is our defense, Jesu defend us!”

God’s Style

Allow me to share with you a selection from one of my favorite chapters in the Bible, I Corinthians 1.

For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved, it is the power of God. For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.

Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?…

But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God. Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble are called: but God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise, and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; and base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are: that no flesh should glory in his presence..  (verses 18-29)

God looked down on this world, the tyrants and their mighty armies, the cruelty, the slavery, the sin that lurks within the heart of every human being–and He sent a baby in a manger to deal with it.

Who knows less, and is more foolish, than a newborn baby? Who is weaker than a baby? Who less likely to overcome the Roman Empire? Who less likely to fulfill thousands of years’ worth of prophecies?

Satan bet everything he had: empires, armies, cruel tyrants, the wise men of the world, the cleverest lawyers, the infinite amount of money, false beliefs, delusions, lies, and the whole bright show of power. Bet it all. And God said, “I’ll see all that, and raise you a baby in a manger.” And Satan laughed at first, laughed himself crazy.

But he isn’t laughing now.

And Satan is busted, broke, defeated, done for. He just hasn’t admitted it yet.
