‘Good Christian Men Rejoice’ (For Patty)

I can’t very well put off my wife’s hymn request, can I? Patty asked for this one, so here it is–

Good Christian Men Rejoice, sung by the Kings College Choir at Cambridge.

(Would you believe there’s a doo-wop version of this carol? I’m sure they meant well…)

By Request, ‘Joseph Dearest, Joseph Mine’

Requested by Phoebe: Joseph Dearest, Joseph Mine by Maddy Prior and the Carnival Band.

I hope these Christmas carols stir you as they stir me. I don’t care if my eyes tear up while I’m listening. This is for the birth of Jesus Christ! Redemption! Forgiveness of sins! Eternal life! That’s worth a few tears of joy, don’t you think?

By Request, ‘Christmas Day’

Tessa asked for this one–Christmas Day by Gustav Holst–it’s sort of a medley of several classic carols all rolled into one. Performed at the Stanford Memorial Church.

Only a week to go! We need some more Christmas Carol Contest entries from readers who haven’t entered yet. Share your favorite carols by entering the contest!

By Request, ‘Adeste Fideles’ (Pavarotti)

Running late–but there’s always time for Pavarotti.

Requested by Phoebe, Adeste Fideles, sung by Luciano Pavarotti at Notre Dame Cathedral, Montreal.

Our annual Christmas Carol Contest is still open, so let’s get in some more entries tomorrow morning. No carol has hit 20 views yet!

By Request, ‘Angels We Have Heard on High’

Requested by Susan–and wow! I can’t follow the lyrics in Italian, but that voice! That music! A gift of God that stirs the soul.

Angels We Have Heard on High, sung by Andrea Bocelli… and now I really do have to get back to work on my book. As soon as I dry my eyes.

By Request, ‘Do You Hear What I Hear?’

Viewership is way, way down today, but at least we’re getting Christmas carol requests to enter in our contest.

Requested by SlimJim, Do You Hear What I Hear?–and I don’t believe anyone ever sung it better than Bing Crosby.

By Request, ‘An Irish Christmas Blessing’

Requested by Thewhiterabbit, and duly entered in our carol contest: An Irish Christmas Blessing, by Keith and Kristyn Getty. So that’s three entries so far today, with room for more. But first I have some business to attend to.

By Request, ‘The Little Drummer Boy’

Okay, let’s have some more entries in our carol contest.

Up now, requested by Ina, The Little Drummer Boy, performed by Boney M.

(So slow this morning! What gives?)

By Request, ‘Let’s Celebrate Christmas’

Requested by Erlene, Let’s Celebrate Christmas, by Carroll Roberson–and that’s an entry into our Christmas Carol Contest.

Now I have to somehow get a Newswithviews column written, and another chapter of my book, and I’ve hardly begun my Christmas shopping— [Puff. puff, pant!]

I’m leaving Byron the Quokka in charge while I try to do those things. Let’s see if he’s ready to preside over this blog.

By Request, ‘Away in a Manger’

This was the first Christmas hymn I learned to sing. At the time I didn’t know what some of the words meant. Cattle were “lowing”? Morning is “nigh”? But I had no trouble at all understanding the meaning.

Requested by Thewhiterabbit: Away in a Manger, sung by Alan Jackson.
