Back to Work, at Last

I haven’t seen this animal in Obann yet–Doedecurus, a giant South American armadillo with a tail club. But I suspect it’s only a matter of time before one or more of them turns up.

Finally! I sat outside and wrote a scene in my new book–which has only just started, and only God knows where the story’s going to take me. Indeed, after I post this, I think I’ll go back and write some more.

Hot tip heard on the radio this morning:

Want to keep your face mask/badge of submission disinfected? Nothing could be easier. Just leave it in your car (I’ve hung mine from the rearview mirror) and let the intense heat that builds up in there kill the germs. Be sure to shut your windows.

And now, back to Obann City for Lord Chutt’s treason trial.

Charging Blindly into the Story

My weekend allergy attack has abated (that’s three weekends in a row), the sun is shining, I’ve got my eye on a good Sabbath rest–and tomorrow I’ve got to plunge back into my new book, Bell Mountain No. 13, The Wind from Heaven.

I just spent a week typing the four or five newest chapters and sending them in to my editor. I give her the book in pieces so she can stop me if anything goes haywire. So far, nothing has. The last bunch of chapters moved her to say, “This story is moving so fast, you’re gonna need a seat-belt to read it.”

I have absolutely no idea where it’s going. Events are piling up like storm clouds, the wind from Heaven’s blowing hard, and I’m just writing it down. I reckon I’m a little over halfway done. I’ve got to finish before the cold weather sets in. I defy anyone to write a decent fantasy novel indoors with the phone ringing every five minutes with a nuisance call. (Congress really ought to do something about that: it’s getting out of hand.) I mean, they’re still calling me to hit up Aunt Joan for money, and she’s been dead for a year and a half. But I digress.

How will this story climax? Where will the clouds finally burst?

When I find out, I’ll write it down.

[Note: If you’re new here, and want to find out more about my books, just go to the home page and click “Books.” It’s all there.]

My Chapters Are Done!

I worked my brains out today, doing over those chapters that the blasted computer devoured yesterday, and they’re all done, emailed to my editor, and printed out on paper, too. Calloo, callay.

Not that The Temptation is finished. There are still more chapters to go, and the Lord has not yet shown me how the story ends.

Meanwhile, some animal called a “shabarak” has entered the story and I don’t yet know what kind of beast it is. I’m leaning toward a Macrauchenia (pictured above). I’ve always been partial to it. It used to live in South America.

Mr. Blog is awful slow today. I hope a cat video later on can pep it up.

Crikey, am I tired!

‘The Temptation’ Marches On

The Throne

The weather is telling me I’d better shift into high gear if I want to finish writing The Temptation before it gets too cold to write outside. Yeah, I could work indoors–but when it comes to my books, I’d much rather work outdoors.

I’m typing up the latest chapter set, which will give me 25 completed chapters. The Lord has not yet shown me how to end the story. All sorts of action is going on, in and out of Obann City and the ruins of Old Obann: my characters are very busy. All I can do is pray for inspiration and plug on. I know from experience that the ending of the book will be given to me in a sudden burst: that’s how He likes to give it to me.

I really wonder what it’ll be!

Progress!

Jack climbing the wall of the Palace of Obann–don’t look down, Jack!–had hardly a more difficult time than we’ve been having since our computer’s hard drive died last weekend. But like our hero, we’re making progress.

Tomorrow morning Adam the tech is coming over to re-install our regular computer. Thanks to the old keyboard here, I was able to write and send my Newswithviews column today. And among the many reasons why getting the old hoss back is a very good thing, I’m just about ready to type and submit another set of chapters of The Temptation.

What will Lord Chutt find as he digs up the ruins of Old Obann? Will Lord Orth come back, or will he venture farther into the East to preach to the Heathen? And will Gurun’s brothers finally make it to Lintum Forest, where their sister is?

To those of you who are new to this blog, I hope you’ll soon make acquaintance with my books. All nine of them (so far: more will come) are available for your examination. Just click “Books” and you’ll get the covers, featuring Kirk DouPonce’s glorious artwork, and sample chapters. Or you can look them up on amazon.com and read the Customer Reviews. If this sounds like a commercial, that’s only because it is. But you can’t blame a writer for wanting readers!

Huff-Puff! Time for More Chapters

I’ve just finished typing up half a dozen new chapters of The Temptation and sending them to Susan. The action of the story is heating up, so I’ll have to get out there tomorrow with my legal pad to find out where it goes next. I also write my Newswithviews column today, and for some reason, I’m really tired.

What will happen as Lord Chutt tries to dig up the ruins of Old Obann? Well, I can’t tell you that, not yet.

To rest my mind, I’m re-reading M. R. James’ collected ghost stories–surely the best ghost stories ever written.

And now to see if my printer is agreeable to printing the new chapters.

‘The Temptation’ Marches On

I’ve typed up another 3,000+ words of The Temptation (Book No. 11 in my Bell Mountain series), and I am too pooped to pop. But I have to present these books in sets of four or five chapters at a time so that Susan can edit them. Just in case I take a wrong turn somewhere, I don’t want to have to find out after I’ve written the whole thing.

Boss Redegger the crime baron has returned, Lord Orth has to choose which way to go when both ways seem right, and there’s a lot going on in Old Obann (not a nice place). And Wytt has his hands full, trying to protect stupid humans…

I love doing this, and to God be the glory. He gives me these stories; I just do my best to write them down.

Hooray! Progress!

Okay! Thirteen chapters of The Temptation are written, typed, and ready to be sent to my editor, Susan. I have no idea how to do that anymore, but my wife does. Today she succeeded in sending edited articles, and they actually got there. It’ll take me a while to learn the new procedure.

Meanwhile, Book No. 10, The Silver Trumpet, has gone through its first cycle of editing–my copy editor’s name is Kathy, and she’s great–and is waiting for me to go over it. We need cover art, a blurb, etc.

Now all we need is for Robbie, our cat, to start getting better. The medicinal ear gel is easy to administer, and we pray it will kick in soon.

For the time being, exhaustion is setting in…

I’m Still Writing a Book

One of the unusual animals you’ll encounter in my books…

Don’t let anyone tell you writing a fantasy novel is easy.

Somehow today I have finished another half-dozen chapters in my new Bell Mountain book, The Temptation (No. 11 in the series), which is beginning to live up to its title. I give God the glory for that.

Robbie is all wiped out from her visit to the vet, Peep is hissing and growling at us because we have a vet’s office smell on us, Patty is trying to do more paperwork for Aunt Joan’s Medicaid while fearing for the health of our poor cat, and our poor country is being torn apart by lunatics. Other than that, everything’s just ticketty-boo.

The book soldiers on. Lord Chutt might be cracking up, and maybe the whole city of Obann with him. We shall see. I won’t know what happens till I write it.

Progress on ‘The Temptation’

Books don’t write themselves. You have to be there, writing them. This has been difficult for me, these past two weeks: doctor appointments, car inspection, really horrible weather, and so on.

Nevertheless, I plug away at it, trusting in the Lord to give me the story that He wants me to tell. Ten chapters of Book No. 11, The Temptation, are written. Fnaa, King Ryons’ double, has just gone down in history, although he doesn’t know it yet. Lord Orth is preparing for a long missionary trip into the Wallekki country. And if you haven’t read any of my Bell Mountain books so far, those last two sentences won’t make a lick of sense.

It has become necessary to re-visit Old Obann, the massive ruins across the river from the living city. It was the capital of Obann’s empire, destroyed by God’s wrath in the Day of Fire. It is not a nice place. I wouldn’t recommend messing about with it, but Lord Chutt, the usurper-in-chief, never listens to me. He has plans.

I won’t find out what happens next until I write it.
