Why I Fear for Britain

From February 18, 2016

I try to stay abreast of world events, but I pay particular attention to Canada and Britain. Canada, of course, is right next door. But why Britain? Because, like many Americans, I feel affection and affinity for the Mother Country: we are, as Churchill once said, two countries divided by a common language. But it also seems to me that the ills which affect Britain are common to all the Western countries, including my own; and that things that happen in Britain and Canada wind up happening here, too.

I have never been to England. I watch a great deal of British TV and movies, just about every day. I read a great deal of fiction by British writers, past and present. And I happen to think you can learn a lot about a nation by becoming familiar with its popular culture.

So I fear for the state of Christianity in Britain. What else am I to think, when episode after episode, in show after show, depicts Christians as at best irrelevant, at worst backward, evil, and dangerous? When actors like Hugh Laurie (atheist) and David Suchet (Christian) both say, in interviews, that Christianity in Britain isn’t what it used to be? Why should they lie about it?

As a Christian, I cannot think any good can come to a nation that turns away from Jesus Christ–especially a nation that’s been Christian for some 1,400 years.

Do I take TV shows and crime novels as literal truth? Of course not. Do I believe every article I read in British newspapers online? No, despite what you may have heard. And I do stay in touch with email friends in Britain and Canada.

From all these different sources, I’m getting the same message: Britain is rejecting her Christian heritage, and–like our own–her culture is coarsening, largely as the result of self-destructive leadership.

Of course, if you’re a fan of “gay marriage,” growth of government, multiculturalism, political correctness, speech codes, and all the rest–well, you’re getting it. In all the Western countries you’re getting all that stuff, and then some.

And so I fear for Britain, as I fear for my own country, and for the same reasons. We as nations have sinned, and we need to repent. Instead, our leaders draft and pursue policies which seem to be based on the principle that evil is good, and good is evil; and the people seem content to have it so.

But not all of us.

No, not all of us.

Somebody must have wondered yesterday, “What happened to Lee’s Newswithviews piece? Where did it go?” Please tell me somebody, somewhere, noticed.

Well, it fell through the cracks–I wonder if that ever happened to William F. Buckley–but here it is now.

An Interview with Western Civilization

Yes, it started life as one of last week’s blog posts. Don’t blame me. It was “TheWhiteRabbit’s” idea. I just thought it was a good one. And my wife thinks this is one of the best things I’ve written, so there.

Leftism is a mortal threat to any civilization.

[We join this broadcast of Eternity Today in progress.]

HOST: Our guest is Western Civilization, which has just died after a run of–what was it?–at least 3,000 years. Pretty good, eh? [Applause]…

HOST: So tell us, Western Civilization. When you finally crashed and burned… what were you doing?

WESTERN CIVILIZATION: [Shuffles feet. Looks at floor. Mumbles incoherently]

HOST: Relax! It’s all over now. Just tell us what you were doing when the crash came.

WESTERN CIVILIZATION: Well… Like… oh, man… We were making up genders–okay? Dozens of new genders! And new sexual lifestyles to go with them!

HOST [Amazed]: You mean, while the Chinese communists were inventing new diseases, like the one that wiped you out, instead of watching them closely and preventing them from doing stuff like that, you guys were… inventing new genders?

WESTERN CIVILIZATION: That’s about the size of it, man. Oh! I’m so ashamed! Who ever would’ve thought that it would end like this?

HOST: Uh, a lot of different people thought so, Westy. And warned you. Again and again. But you never listened. You just said it was “religion” and made faces at it, stopped up your ears, and turned away.

WESTERN CIVILIZATION: If only I’d come to my senses in time! If only I’d taken adequate precautions! If only we hadn’t been so greedy for all that Chinese money, that it made us blind to all else! Then we might’ve gotten off with just a damned good scare–just enough to scare us back onto the right track.

HOST: But you were too busy making up new genders.

WESTERN CIVILIZATION: [Breaks down into tears, wailing, and gnashing of teeth. Studio audience gives thunderous applause]

HOST: Well, folks, that’s it for Eternity Today today. Tune in to Eternity Today tomorrow for another special guest who wishes it was… yesterday!

Make Civilization Great Again!

The Book that Made Your World: How the Bible Created the Soul of Western Civilization

What was so good about Western civilization, that it galloped past the rest of the world and achieved great things?

The Bible!

In 2011 Vishal Mangalwadi, a scholar from India who converted to Christianity, wrote a book that brilliantly proves that it was the Bible, God’s Word, and nothing else, that made the West great. With the Red Pope yapping about the obligation of countries with decent, relatively honest governments to stop eating food that ought to go to people living in countries with unspeakably corrupt governments, and the need for some even more corrupt world government to “redistribute” everything, Mangalwadi’s book deserves to be read–and re-read–by, well, everyone.

I reviewed his book in 2012, and it’s high time to revisit it. Sure, it’s a long review: but this book deserves one: The Book That Made Your World, by Vishal Mangalwadi.

Stanford Students Ban Western Civilization

Okay, the headline is a little misleading. What the student government–since when do these bucket-heads get to have a say in the curriculum?–actually banned was a proposal to have the kiddies take courses in Western Civilization: you know, that thing they all live in. ( https://pjmedia.com/trending/2016/04/12/western-civilization-no-thanks-standford-students-say/ )

But by a 6-1 vote, the student government–I’m beginning to find that term somewhat threatening, like “people’s soviet” or something–forbade these courses to be taught. In fact, they expressed “outrage” that anyone should even think of studying Western Civilization.

You’ve probably already guessed the reason: Western Civilization, say the ignoramuses, is “upholding White supremacy,” yatta-yatta. And it’s racist, too. But then everything is racist and I, for one, don’t care anymore.

Why do I cover these innumerable examples of collidge turning its students into idiots?

To warn you what you’re letting yourself in for, if you’re about to send a son or daughter to college. It’s going to cost you plenty, and the end result is likely to be a pluperfect idiot who throws a tantrum whenever he sees or hears or reads anything that doesn’t match his incredibly narrow and altogether ridiculous world-view.

To equip you, in case you ever have to discuss this with someone who thinks everybody ought to go to college, with facts as ammunition.

If possible, to deter you from sending your daughter or your son to a college where the staff will finish the job that public schools and popular culture have started on the students’ minds.

Remember–college is now synonymous with idiocy.
