‘Thy Word Is a Lamp Unto My Feet’

This hymn gets me every time: Thy Word Is a Lamp Unto My Feet, sung here by Amy Grant. I think it was the first hymn I learned that wasn’t in a hymn book.

I can hardly believe tomorrow is the Fourth of July. I hope I’ll be able to post some favorite hymns.

‘Be Thou My Vision’

I’m sick of us, Patty and me, being sick: in danger of losing heart. Still, I thought it might be nice to post one more hymn before I conk out for the evening. But which one?

Be Thou My Vision, an ancient Irish hymn, 1,500 years old or so, still has power to move us to tears. Sung here by 4Him.

I think of it as a kind of prayer.

‘Oh, Sinner Man’

Transport a Caribbean hymn to the cold waters of Scotland, and this is what you get–Oh, Sinner Man…with seals.

Anyhow, it’s one of my favorite hymns and that’s why I post it. I’ll post yours, too, if you ask me to.

‘In the Sweet By and By’

Joshua and Jeremy, you’ve outdone yourselves! This is just beautiful: an instrumental of a classic hymn, In the Sweet By and By. It brought a tear to my eye… yes, it did.

‘Behold the Mountain of the Lord’

This ancient Scottish hymn–sung here by Godfrey Birtill–never fails to move me. If we could only see the mountain!

Behold the Mountain of the Lord: joy and gravitas at the same time.

‘We Have Heard the Joyful Sound’

Ahhh! This is one of my very favorite hymns: We Have Heard the Joyful Sound (Jesus Saves!), as sung at the United Reformed Church’s 2012 synod. That’s the Hudson River Valley in the background–beautiful works of God’s hands.

(Boy howdy, do I need saving!)

‘I Need Thee Every Hour’

My mother used to sing this as she did her housework. So did my aunts. I guess they got it from Grandma. How this hymn brings them all back to me! I Need Thee Every Hour, sung by Fernando Ortega.

‘In Christ Alone’

This is one of the most popular hymns we post here–In Christ Alone, performed by Keith and Kristyn Getty, with Alison Krauss.

Tomorrow it’s Patty’s operation, and I might not be able to be here all day–so please pray for us.

‘Amazing Grace’ (Alan Jackson)

I’m listing your favorite hymns, dear readers, and I’m going to post them all, too, day by day. And the first one named is Amazing Grace. I hope you like this mellow rendition by Alan Jackson.

While I’m posting readers’ favorite hymns, we remain open for specific hymn requests. If you have a hymn you’d like to share, just leave a comment anywhere and we’ll do the rest.

What’s Your Favorite Hymn?

We like to start every blogging day here with a hymn, and I like to post the hymns that you request. When left to my own devices, I’m afraid I tend to repeat myself and choose the same relatively few hymns again and again–because they’re my favorites. Light of the World, Hyfrydol, To Be a Pilgrim: well, what can I say?

I’d love to know what your favorite hymns are. I know it’s impossible to pick just one, so please feel free to list as many as you like.

I’ll keep track of the ones that are mentioned and will report to you which hymns seem to be the most popular. Don’t be bashful! If you only knew how hard it is to elicit a wide reader response… you’d wonder why I try. But I’m really interested in what you all have to say.
