Wild and Crazy Little Guys: Jerboas

Here’s what happens when you leave jerboas unsupervised. Although probably it happens when they’re supervised, too.

Jerboas are long-legged jumping mice that live in the deserts of Africa and Asia. We have kangaroo rats in our deserts. What is the connection between the desert lifestyle and jumping?

Beats me.

Sanity Break: Cats Acting Like People

Don’t worry–it’s not about cats lying, running for public office and then betraying the cats who voted for them. Cats will never learn to imitate the finer points of fallen humanity.

But they can imitate certain things they see us do. My cat Henry used to try to horn in when I was playing Strat-O-Matic Baseball; but his idea of the game was to flip the little plastic men to the floor and bat them under the bookcase, and I couldn’t have that. You should have heard the back-talk he’d give me.

Anyway, let’s unwind. Join me in enjoying these cats.

Sanity Break: Cats and Babies

You would think a lot could go wrong with that combination, but cats seem to hit it off with babies. Both may be smarter than they’re given credit for.

Sanity Break: Guilty Cats

I feel the need for a cat break.

Here are cats that show every sign of being upset when they’ve been caught doing a no-no. Watching the one cat shred the roll of toilet paper, I wonder whether Mt. Vesuvius has been unjustly blamed for the destruction of Pompeii. Maybe it was cats.

More Funny Cats–Hooray!

Once again we turn to our cats for a dose of sanity.

This red cat in the sink reminds me of our cat, Buster–who once managed to turn a pair of my wife’s panties into a kind of toga, and then posted himself in the living room window for everyone to see.

I must admit he never balanced a Q-tip on his nose, though.

Sanity Medicine: Kitten and Owl

So I’m taking my blood pressure, and the stupid box falls over and topples my glass of iced tea all over the table… Grrrr!

But here we have the calming influence of a kitten making friends with a little fluffy owl. Ah, that’s nice! Much nicer than–oh, stop thinking about it!

I am currently reading Bell Mountain No. 9, The Throne, trying to come up with suggested for our cover artist, Kirk DuoPonce. He’ll be mighty hard press to outdo the covers he created for The Glass Bridge and The Temple.

I wonder how my cats would get along with an owl.

Today’s Final Video, Starring a Spider

Ladies and gentlemen! For your edification and enjoyment, we proudly present [trumpet fanfare] a spider chasing a laser pointer light.

But not just any spider! Nosireebob–this here is a genuine jumping spider. If you look closely, you’ll see she has two rather large eyes, plus a bunch of smaller ones you probably can’t see. That’s what makes jumping spiders unique in spiderdom: they can see! They hunt their prey by sight.

Still, there is one thing that defeats our most concentrated mental efforts–

What does this spider think she sees, when she sees the laser light?

Sanity Medicine: Snuggly Bunnies

Ibis Hotels came up with this snuggly bunny TV ad. After all the kerfluffle this morning, I thought this might relax me. I hope you enjoy it!

I’m crazy about bunnies and have always wished I might have one, but it has never come to pass. I wouldn’t want my mice saying, “So what are we–chopped liver?” But love is a renewable resource, isn’t it?

Sanity Medicine: Cute Kittens

First thing tomorrow morning, I get to go to the doctor for my blood pressure. I am terrified that they’ll find all sorts of things wrong with me that I never knew were there. “I say, old boy, did you know you’ve got a rather nasty thing going on inside your duodenum?”

Yesterday I almost popped a gasket when it seemed Medicare was going to confiscate the money for my aunt’s pre-paid funeral. Hint: Put the money in an irrevocable trust where they can’t get it. My aunt had wisely done so, as we found out after a time.

Please pray I get spared evil tidings tomorrow.

Now back to the kittens.

Large Cats in Small Places

I hope you won’t mind if I indulge in another cat video. I have my reasons.

My cats do this all the time, trying to squeeze into tiny spaces.

Reminds me of the time I crawled inside a cement mixer. But I was only a wee lad then. I know better know.
