Victor Davis Hanson: The Last Laugh

Victor Hanson Faculty Profile Image

We seldom see Victor Davis Hanson cracking up. He’s a very sober pundit–right?

But here he’s as merry as a milkmaid–because SloJo Biden’s leaving office in a very few days… and because he’s babbling about “threats to America” and it’s all crapola.

What threats are these, Joe?

Oh… Climate Change. The U.S. Supreme Court. Money in politics. And, of course, “oligarchs” using their vast wealth to subjugate the country–this from the gavone who awarded George Soros (!) a Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Does Biden take hypocrisy pills? I mean, he’s so far out there in fantasy-land, he”s got Victor Hanson giggling like a schoolgirl–can’t hold it back!

Is there any Far Left oligarch, or communist strong man, from whom SloJo’s campaign did not accept rich financial contributions? And his son Hunter is a bigger crook than he is!

You can’t help wondering: how creatures like Biden get elected to high public office. Is it all cheating, or are tens of millions of voters truly that masochistic? Have we become so inured to hypocrisy in politics that we don’t even notice it anymore?

Clinton, Obama, Biden… I do hate to think we deserved them.

Stupid Stuff! (A History)

In Roman Days, Britain was a Pretty Posh Place - history unfettered

It did not have to turn out this way.

I’ve got to tell you about some videos I watched last night.

First, Britain After Rome: The Age of Arthur. They polished off Arthur in a minute or so: I think his name was only included to attract readers. On the whole, though, well worth watching: a history of all the stupid stuff perpetrated by Britain’s rulers after Rome withdrew her legions. Almost instantaneously, Britain’s old, pre-Roman political structures, kingdoms large and small, were back in business.

Although their country was under attack by Irish, Picts, and Anglo-Saxons, the British rulers pursued folly after folly: (1) refusing to defend their borders, (2) fighting among themselves, (3) raising great armies and then packing them off to continental Europe to try to conquer what had once been the Western Roman Empire–and most of the men in those armies never returned and were unavailable for home defense. These self-destructive policies destroyed a realm that could have been successfully defended.

Next, a short analysis by historian Victor Davis Hanson, This Will Be the End of Us. I soon realized it was the same story that I’d just watched, with America and her leaders repeating all the same foolishness which led to the demise of Britain. The same damned story! Every stupid thing they did in Britain in the 6th and 7th centuries, our leaders are doing in America today.

Finally, in a vain attempt to rinse my brain, a Fail Army video: people getting into easily avoidable troubles, painful and expensive troubles visited upon them by their own ridiculously bad decisions. The supply is inexhaustible. And it’s the same damned stupid story! Just on a personal scale.

This year’s elections may indeed be our last chance. But even more important, we need a tidal wave of national repentance. We need God’s protection, we need His guidance–we are getting absolutely nowhere without it.

Britain could have saved herself, but didn’t. The lesson is in neon letters ten feet tall.

Victor Davis Hanson: Stop the Money

Victor Davis Hanson

I’m posting here a column by Victor Davis Hanson (https://amgreatness.com/2023/10/23/the-sickness-of-our-universities-and-the-cure/)–“The Sickness of Our Universities–and the Cure”–because he’s now saying something that we’ve been saying here for months, if not years:

Our universities are a disgrace, a mess–and the only way to cure the disease is to stop pouring money into it.

That’s what it boils down to. *Curtail government handouts.*Tax university endowments, currently (and wrongly!) tax-exempt. *Stop federal funds. *Require students to pass the equivalent of an SAT test to graduate. *Get government out of the $1.8 trillion student loan business. *And finally, to donors: “Just say no.”

College costs a fortune nowadays, and what are we getting for our money? Not much! What we are getting is a lot of toxic foolishness that does real harm to the American people and our constitutional republic.

It’s got to stop.

Victor Davis Hanson: ‘No One Can Rule the World’

Historian Victor Davis Hanson looked back on over 2,000 years of global governance schemes and analyzes why every single one of them failed… and why such schemes as are hatched today will also fail.

I would like to add that there is a rightful King, Jesus Christ, whose right it is to rule the world. He is not just the only one with a right to rule; He is the only one who can. Because worldly governments administered by worldly men and women, sinners all, acting on false or incomplete information, emotion, wishful thinking, and sometimes outright folly… are not capable of ruling all the other poor chumps.

They’ve given up trying to get their global government by force of arms and have switched their methods to seduction, manufactured chaos, and the worst education systems in human history. Anything to gain power over us “useless eaters” (that’s what the No. 2 clop in the World Economic Forum calls us plebs)!

God’s not gonna let you do it, chumley. It’s foolish to try.

Beyond the point of no repair

Columnist and historian Victor Davis Hanson has asked a very good question:

“What does a people do when its highest officials simply renounce their oaths of office and refuse to enforce laws that they don’t like?” (https://amgreatness.com/2023/03/05/life-among-the-ruins/).

These officials, he says–and I agree–are ruining our country. They’re turning our cities into dirty, crime-ridden hellholes; and once the damage is irreparable, they’ll get to work on the suburbs.

It’s more than just refusing to enforce laws that they don’t like. It’s even more than crooked DAs refusing to prosecute crime and seeing to it that criminals are released back onto the streets as soon as possible. Our highest officials promote, enable, and strengthen groups and activities that do real harm. It’s like they really hate America and are doing their level best to destroy it–or at least turn it into something unrecognizable to sane people who remember better times.

Are there really, truly accredited doctors who sincerely believe that boys can–and should be!–turned into girls, and girls into boys? Are there really, truly high officials who sincerely believe that our nation’s borders can–and should be!–erased?

And so on, and so on.

The question won’t go away. “What do a people do” when this level of misgovernment is done to them?

I believe Thomas Jefferson had the answer to that question. You’ll find it in the Declaration of Independence.

Too Much Despair Out There!

Are the big guys bailing out on us?

Yesterday I encountered several opinion pieces whose message was “We give up, the bad guys win! Goodbye, America!” And then I read Victor Davis Hanson’s recent essay, “Anarchy, American Style” (https://amgreatness.com/2023/01/29/anarchy-american-style/).

Holy cow. Over the years I’ve respected Hanson as a commentator–but this is something else. Maybe he ought to be put on a suicide watch.

According to Hanson (and he’s not the only one who says so), Far Left Crazy now controls virtually everything… and has become The Establishment. Any meaningful opposition simply does not exist. (Ron DeSantis apparently doesn’t know this.)

Victor, Victor! Live up to your name! Is God not on His throne? Will He not judge our time? Is truth no longer truth? And do the odds really matter? Because the enemy is big and strong and wealthy, does that mean we do well to surrender? I should send you one of my T-shirts that reads, “If they have to kill us, they’ve lost.”

I am a nobody. Not too small to step on and crush, but still pretty much a nobody. Does this woeful era of history discourage me? You bet it does. Does it give me a license to give up?

No. Never.

My wife asked me, “So what’s his solution? What does he say we should do?”

“He has nothing to say by way of a solution. Not even a ‘Stay tuned for Part II, “What to Do About it.”‘

We belong to a God who uses the weak to overthrow the mighty, foolish things to confound the wise, and things that are despised to cast down things that are esteemed [See 1 Corinthians Chapter 1]. As bad as things are, we His people have faced worse. Much worse. Two world wars kind of spring to mind.

If our leaders are going to lose heart and give up–well, ask God to give us new ones. He can raise them up at will.
