What? You didn’t like that octopus video? Well, all right, here’s something a bit fuzzier. And somewhat dryer: kittens cuddling with dogs.
Any one of these dogs could swallow the kitten in one gulp, and yet they don’t. No. They play. They cuddle. I wish I could join them, but it’s only a video. Even Gumby never learned how to go into a video.
Eh? You don’t know who Gumby was?
Ask your mother.
When it comes to creation, the Lord Our God has a lot of cards to play. He doesn’t have to confine intelligence and sensitivity to creatures who have fur, feathers, and skeletons.
Think about it. Mammals, birds, reptiles, even fish–they have a lot in common. But an octopus? No bones. No skull. Nothing cuddly about it. But an octopus does have a brain; and, by all accounts, a fairly good one. See how this octopus interacts with the human beings who rescued it from stranding. A lot of the scientists who work with octopi, I’ve read, wind up liking them–and always being fascinated by how smart they are.
God’s stuff: you can’t put a limit on His creativity.
Let’s see… They insult us all year long by kneeling instead of standing for the National Anthem, they call us a crummy no-good racist country… And we’re gonna watch their Big Fat Game? Really?
Do we really have so little self-respect as that? How badly, how desperately, do we need to see another stupid football game? Is there anything they can say to us, any way they can show us yet more clearly what they think of us, that might drive away their audience?
We really do ask for it, don’t we?

That’s not enough to drive home the lesson. Nowhere near enough.
Can it be that we just don’t care enough to pass up a football game? There’s nothing else that we can do tomorrow?
Shame on us.
Hi, Mr. Nature here, with a very unusual little fish that lots of people have never heard of: Anableps, aka the four-eyed fish. I met this little creature in a Mark Trail comic in the Sunday paper when I was a small boy, and never forgot it. Not that I was ever going to catch one in my net in Tommy’s Pond. The four-eyed fish lives in ponds and streams in Central and South America.
Does it really have four eyes? Well, just about! Its two eyes are each divided into two different parts so that the fish can see above and below the surface of the water at the same time–something I have tried to do with a swim mask on, but no dice. So this otherwise unremarkable fish has a highly specialized eye, unique to its kind.
This is God’s stuff, marvelous to behold. None of this pfud about the fish’s eye “evolving” from one form to another–it’d be pretty useless at the half-way point; and if a chance mutation resulted in a couple of four-eyed fish hatching out of the eggs of an ordinary two-eyed fish, that’s not much to build a viable species on.
I’m Mr. Nature, and I can end my sentence with a preposition if I want to.
So you’re walking along, and you happen to glance down–and there on the sidewalk… is a brain. It takes a moment for you to recognize it as a brain: not something you see every day. And just a little farther ahead, there is another one…

A Sunday morning, late in the spring. All green, all flowers. This is the hymn you hear them singing in the church. You stop to listen. And Jesus Christ Our Lord, through the voices of His people lifted in song, through the sunshine shimmering on the pond beside the church, through the green of the landscape and the blue of the sky, through the Holy Spirit stirring in your heart so that you feel it in your throat–He takes you by the hand, and He Leadeth Me. I have no idea who’s singing this, but it has deeply moved me.
All right, perhaps I exaggerate–although you’ll never get any of these cats to admit they’re not raising the baby, maybe with some help from bigger humans. But look how good these cats are with these babies! I wish my parents had had a cat for me to play with, when I was a baby. (And note the poor dog left outside and frantic to get in and join the fun.)

I was going to wait till I calmed down a bit before I commented on this, but I think that might take too long.
New Mexico is considering legislation to force every high school student to apply to at least one college as a requirement for graduation (https://fellowshipoftheminds.com/2018/02/02/new-mexico-could-be-first-state-to-force-students-to-apply-for-college/).
This is, of course, nothing more than a jobs program for “educators.” And it’s bipartisan! That means it’s good, right? Like, the Evil Party and the Nothing Party have actually gotten together to sponsor this, so how could it be wrong?
This really is the limit.
Uh, what if you don’t want to go to college? What if you want to do something useful with your life–like, for instance, become a skilled auto mechanic–instead of sitting in a classroom “learning” about White Privilege?
This is only further evidence of how deeply our governing class despises us and just can’t stop gnawing at our liberties.
For crying out loud! There are already too many colleges and looniversities, too many overpaid and over-pensioned educators, and way, way, way too many young people going to college and having their minds turned into mush! We need to defund and shrink the bloated absurdity called “higher education,” not expand it even more.
This is a shameful and preposterous proposal, and it must be defeated.
