By Request, ‘It Is Well with My Soul’

We haven’t heard this hymn in a while. Today it’s been requested by Erlene–It Is Well With My Soul, sung by the Isaacs.

The hymn contest closes Aug. 8… so where are you, everybody?

Cat Flees from… Guinea Pig?

Isn’t this just too shameful for words? How did this cat ever get the idea that you’re supposed to run away from a guinea pig?

Oh, wait–really? It seems the cat spent four years in college. That would account for it.

Chillin’ With Livy

The Early History Of Rome by Livy

Ah! I’ve just finished typing and submitting my Newswithviews column for the week. You should see it here tomorrow.

Meanwhile, I took a break to enjoy a cigar and read some of Livy’s The Early History of Rome. I’m at the part where the hubris and folly of some of the best and brightest jidrools in Rome provoked a massive invasion by the Gauls and the sacking and burning of the city.

Livy writes of triumphs and disasters, good and evil, wisdom and folly; but through it all, he carries the same message at all times:

Human nature doesn’t change; therefor politics never changes. There isn’t much in our own political monkey-dance that we won’t find in Livy’s. The fact that we’re still here in spite of all that is oddly comforting.

We know, as Livy didn’t, that God is sovereign over history and shapes it to His ends. Even our disasters, brought on by ourselves, He builds into the structure of His plan. That was something the kings of Assyria, Babylon, and Egypt refused to believe–to their cost. God built them into His plan, too.

Livy, a contemporary of Augustus Caesar, loved his country but feared for her future. Little did he know that God was already shaping all the world’s future–with the birth of a baby in Bethlehem.

And now, back to work!

‘Receive the Holy Spirit’ (Christian Blogger)

Acts 19 - The Disciples Who Had Not Heard of the Holy Spirit!

We have this today from the Unashamed of Jesus blog,

Acts 19- Receive The Holy Spirit

In Acts 19, the early church in Ephesus had not yet even heard of the Holy Spirit and had only the baptism of John. Paul supplied what they were missing.

Without me you can do nothing, Jesus said. We have big things, daunting things, to do in this world; and we can’t do them without the Lord.  “If we want to see the power of God in the Church,” concludes the blogger, “we need the Holy Spirit!” Amen.

Note: I wish to provide more exposure to Christian blogs, to counter Big Tech censorship. If you’re a Christian blogger and would like to see some of your work displayed here, please just let me know! There is no charge for this.

By Request, ‘Great Is Thy Faithfulness’

Requested by Erlene, this lovely hymn–Great Is Thy Faithfulness, sung by the Blue Rock Mennonite Youth–with some of God the Father’s most gorgeous background sets. If all He ever did was to create the beauty of the earth, we should love Him for that! But of course He has done so much more.

Philip Morris: ‘Ban Cigarettes!’

Call For Philip Morris Sign • Antique Advertising

Every now and then you encounter hypocrisy that deserves a monument–at least a pyramid.

Philip Morris International, the tobacco giant, has called for the United Kingdom to ban cigarettes (https://nypost.com/2021/07/26/tobacco-turnaround-philip-morris-wants-to-ban-smoking/). Uh-huh. [Philip Morris USA, by the way, is not part of PMI.]

Why does this make me think of the Khedive of Egypt and the Sultan of Zanzibar, the two biggest slave dealers in Africa in the latter 19th century, publicly calling for the abolition of slavery while they continued to profit from it?

PMI sez they’re gonna shift their market toward “smoke-free products.” Guess what other market they want to get into, big-time.

Pot. Marijuana. They want to sell pot.

Maybe they could call it Healthy Smokes. They could hire Bill Clinton to smirk, “I didn’t inhale.”

Well, it’ll give Brits something to do during their lockdowns…

‘No, No, Please, No! No “Katana-Wielding Scullery Maid”!’ (2018)

At last! A fantasy novel that tries to give a definitive answer to the age-old question, Which are more obnoxious–zombies or superheroes? And is there any limit to how ridiculous you can make the martial arts?

No, No, Please, No! No ‘Katana-Wielding Scullery Maid’!

The whole blamed point of fantasy is to let the imagination run wild. Here it is locked up in Cliche Camp with watchtowers, guards, and dogs to make sure no original idea can get out or get in.

My sword sensei used to go green around the gills when people came in asking to learn “those jumpin’, spinnin’ kicks” that they see in movies.

Books that make the reader dumber… a growth industry.

By Request, ‘I Saw the Light’

We have an entry in our hymn contest–requested by Ina (in Scotland!), I Saw the Light, sung by Johnny Cash. This video was originally part of a Columbo episode.

We still have had only one hymn get as many as 20 views; I can’t imagine why our hymn contest has fallen on such hard times. To enter, all you have to do is request a hymn. But only a rew people do that.

Well, it’s all over on Aug. 8…

Fearsome Scary Norbert

I know it’s a short video, but Norbert’s the cutest dog in the world and I’ll take what I can get. Warning: Do not watch this video if you have a preternaturally weak heart and are terrified of fluffy little dogs.

By Request, ‘I Want to Stroll Over Heaven With You’

As if our hymn contest wasn’t in enough trouble already, I loaded this hymn onto my mouse and somehow managed not to post it. So I’m trying again.

Requested by Erlene, I Want to Stroll Over Heaven With You, sung by Alan Jackson.

Can I post it this time? Let’s find out.
